My invention relates to friction absorbing devices and more particularly Vto such a device com-.
monly called a snubber which, when associated witha group or nest of springs, serves to dampen the vibrations thereof in suchmanner as to substantially eliminate harmonic vibrationsV of said springs. y
My novel snubber is particularly designed for applicationrto a coil spring vgroup affording support for the bolster of a railway car truck Wherein said snubber may be substituted for one or more of the coil springs constituting said group as desired. It will, however, be understood that my novel snubber or friction absorbing .device may be used for any analogous purpose to which it is suited.
A specific object of my invention is to` devise a snubber such as above described in which a pair of followers are in frictional engagement with a plurality of' associated friction shoesVthe shoesv being urged into. said engagement by means Aof a novel spring seat casting in wedge engagement with the shoes, said casting affording a seat for an associated spring sleeved over one of said followers and afforded a seat against a flange thereon.
A further object of my invention is to provide an arrangement such as above described in which the follower over which the` above-described springis sleeved is splitintoa plurality of segments whereby eachof said segments may be urged into frictional engagement with said spring by means of the friction shoes above described.
Still another object of my invention is to de visejin combination with the above-described snubber aV novel meansV for retaining the device in assembly on the release stroke thereof, said means comprising a member received through aligned passages in the spaced followers and inV the spring seat casting and said member having at opposite ends thereof means for abutment with respective followers in order to limit their movement away from each other on the release stroke. Still another object of my invention is to de sign a novel spring seat casting comprising a ringlike base having an opening therethrough Vfor the receptionzof an associated follower and affording about the margin thereof a-seat for an associated spring, andsaid spring seat casting also comprising an integral yoke or bridge spanning said opening and comprising wedge surfacesv for engagement with associated friction shoes, said bridge being provided with an opening for the reception of the securing member above described.4

In afriction absorbing device, a follower n comprising internal friction surfaces, friction shoes there-between in engagement with respective of said surfaces, a member comprising a yoke in diagonal face engagement with the adjacent ends of said shoes, and a base on said yoke affording a spring seat, an opening through said base, another follower projecting through said opening in diagonal face engagement with the opposite ends of said shoes, and a spring abutting said seat and under compression between said seat and the first-mentioned follower.
8. h1 a friction absorbing device, a follower comprising internal friction surfaces, friction shoes engaged therewith, a member in wedge engagement with corresponding ends of said shoes and affording a spring seat, another follower in wedge engagement with the opposite ends of said shoes and affording a seat for the device, and resilient means abutting said spring seat and means on the first-mentioned follower, said resilient means being sleeved over said first-mentioned follower.

In a friction absorbing device, a follower having internal friction surfaces, friction shoes engaged therewith, a member in wedge engagement with said shoes and affording a spring seat, resilient means sleeved over said follower and abutting said seat `and means on said follower, and a spaced follower in wedge engagement with said shoes and affording a seat for one end of said device,'the first-mentioned follower being split into a plurality of segments to afford frictional engagement thereof with said resilient means.

In a friction absorbing device, a compression spring, a split follower affording a seat therefor and presenting internal friction surfaces therewithin, friction shoes engaging said surfaces, a yoke member affording a seat for the opposite end of said spring and having wedge means bearing against the ends of said shoes remote from said last-mentioned seat, another follower in wedge engagement with the near ends of said shoes, and securingmeans extending between said followers.

In a friction absorbing device, spaced followers affording seats for opposite ends of said device, one being split into a plurality of segments, friction shoes each in engagement with both followers, a member in wedge engagement with said shoes, and resilient means sleeved over said split follower and seated thereagainst and against said member, said resilient means being in frictional engagement with said segments.

In a. snubber, a compression spring presenting internal friction surfaces, a follower affording a seat for one end of said spring and having arcuate walls extending therewithin for engagement with said surfaces, said walls presenting internal friction faces, friction shoes engaging said faces, a member affording a seat for the opposite end of said spring and having wedge engagement with the ends of said shoes remote from said` last-mentioned seat, a follower in wedge engagement with the opposite ends of said shoes, and retaining means lbetween said followers, the engaging faces betweensaid shoes and said first-mentioned follower being along inclined V-shaped areas.

In a snubber, a compression spring, a split follower seated against said'spring and presenting friction walls therewithin in engagement therewith, friction shoes engaging said Walls, a member affording a seat for the opposite end of said spring and in wedge yengagement with the ends of said shoes remote from said last-mentioned seat, anotherfollower in wedge engagement with the near ends of said shoes, and securing means between said followers.

In a friction absorbing device, a compression spring, a split follower affording a seat therefor and presenting friction walls therewithin, wedge means in diagonal face engagement with said walls, a member affording a seat for the opposite end of said spring and in Wedge engagement with like ends of said Wedge means, an opening in said member, a spaced follower projecting through said opening in wedge engagement with the opposite ends of said wedge means, and securing means for said device, closingof said device being operative to urge said wedge means against said walls. In a snubber, a compression spring presenting internal friction areas, a split top follower seated against one end of said spring with walls therewithin, shoes having wedge engagement with said walls, a spring support member abutting the opposite extremity of said spring with wedge means engaging the ends of said shoes remote lower in wedge engagement with the opposite ends of said shoes, and securing means for said followers.
