AIR-PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. *7, 1920.
Application filed November 13, 1918. Serial No. 262,326.
To all whom it may Concern:
Be it known that I, SHIRLEY H. BossAR'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefierson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to tire pumps for automobiles and the principal object of the invention relates to the novel construction of the pump and the means for securing the pump to the running board of the automobile.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a part sectional view showing the pump in operative position on a running board of an automobile;
Fig. 2 is an end view;
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plunger.
In these views, 1 indicates the running board of an automobile and 2 indicates the casing or box for containing the pump 3 when the same is not in use. The casing is formed of two portions 4 and 5, the lower portion 4 being secured to the running board by any suitable means. The portion 5 is hinged to the portion 4; by the'hinge 6 so that said portion 5 may be swung upwardly to permit the removal of the pump. As shown, the two portions are formed by dividing the casing substantially diagonally. A base 7 is secured to the bottom of the casing and said base at one end is provided with a pair of ears 8. The other end of the base is provided with a slotted enlargement 9.
The pump 3 consists of a pair ofcylinders 10 secured to a: base 11, and the usual pistons 12 and the rods 18. The base 11 is provided with the ears 14 which are pivoted to the ears 8 so that the pump may be rocked into and out of the casing. A link 15 has one end pivoted to the upper part of the pump and its other end having an offset portion which is adapted to engage the slot in the enlargement 9 to hold the pump in upright position. The piston rods 3' are connected to a T-shaped member 16 by the links 17 and said member is pivoted to an upright 19 forming part of the pump. The member 16 has one arm provided with a socket 20 to receive the handle 21 of which :the member may be rocked to reciprocate the pistons.
22 is a handle carried by the part 19 for" facilitating the operation of the Pump. I prefer. to form each piston of a leather cup 23 with a follower 24 above the same and a head 25 below the same, these parts being engaged by the screw threaded end of the piston rods 13.
It will thus be seen that when the pump is not in use it is carried in an inclosed casing on the running board of the automobile. When the pump is to be used the upper part of the casing is swung upwardly and the pump moved into upright position and held in this position by-th e link 15.
parts, provided that such changes fall with in the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:-
A device of the class described comprising a casin a um) hin 'edlv secured thereto by, D u
and comprising a pair of cylinders, pistons therein, rods connected with the pistons, an upright connected with the pump, a T- shaped member pivoted to said upright, links connecting two arms of the T-mcmber with the piston rods and the other armv having a socket therein and a handle for engaging said socket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
SHIRLEY H. BOSSART.
