To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRYM. CLOUDE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Pumping Devices for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pumping devices for automobiles, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device which may be readily applied to automobiles of the existing types, and by means of which air may be supplied to the tires.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described whlch may be readily removed.
A further object of my inventionis to provide a pumping device in which the power isderived from the rear wheels of the automobile, and in which means is provided for the successful operation of the device, even though the pump may be slightly out of alinement with the crank pin carried by the wheel.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel form of pitman which is extensible and which is provided with joints which insure the successful operation of the device when the parts are not in alinement,
as stated.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which t Figure 1 is a side view of the device. 1 Fig.2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig.1.

In carrying out my invention I make use of the rear wheel of the automobile as the driving means for the pump. In Fig. 1 I have shown an automobile which I have de noted in general by A. This is provided with a rear wheel W having the usual hub plate 1. Secured to the hub plate 1, is a bracket 2 of the shape shown in Fig. 9, this bracket having preferably a moonshaped base 2* to which the body portion of the bracket 2 is integrally secured, and being provided with a connecting pin 2 having a recess 2 therein. At the end of the body portion 2 is a slot 2 Arranged to cooperate with the connecting pin 2 is a crank pin 3, which is provided with a base portion 3 having an open ing 3' therethrough, arranged to fit over the pin 2", and having a set screw 3 arranged to enter the recess 2 in the pin 2', so as to firmly secure the crank pin to the bracket. In order to further prevent the rotation of the crank pin with respect to the connecting pin 2 I provide lugs 8 on each side of the portion 3 which are arranged to enter the slot 2. A further purpose of these lugs is to center the'crank pin, that is to say, to insure its extending at right angles to the face of the plate 1.
It will be understood that each rear wheel may be provided with a pumping device like that about to be described, and to this end the pins 3 are provided with bases having lugs 3 on each side, so as to make either a left or a right connection, depending upon the side to which the pin is applied.
In Fig. 9 I have shown one end of the pitman in detail. This consists of a bearing portion 4: arranged to surround the cylindrical portion of the crank pin 3, and having an integral laterally extending plate or arm 49 provided with an opening 4. The plate 4: is arranged to enter a slot a in a telescopic portion 1", the latter being provided with an opening 4 arranged to register with the opening 4". A pin 5 forms a pivotal connection between the parts 4. and 4 It will be observed that the part 1 is of considerable length, and the purpose of this is to form a long hearing so that there will not be any play in the rod in a-plane at right.

The former, as will be'seen from Fig. 1,-extendsinto a large pump cylinder 15, and the latter into the small pump cylinder 16. ,A set screw 17 permits the eXtension of the telescopic parts 4 and 4 of the pitman.
The means for securingthe pump tothe running board of the automobile is as follows:
Secured to the running board 18 (see :Figs. 6 and 7) is an 'L-shaped bracket 19 having extending therefrom a .pin 20 arranged to enter an opening 21- *in the foot plate 21 of an ordinarydouble acting pump having the cylinders 15 and 16. A locking pin or cotter pinfl22 is secured by a chain 23 to a portion I of the bracketand may be insertedthroughan'opening in the pin 20, soas-to firmly lockthe pump to the bracket.
At the opposite end of the pump .is a bracket like that shown in Fig.8 having a base portio'nQA arranged to be secured to the undersideof the running board 18 and provided withburvedTecesses 24: and '24: respectivelyarranged to receive the cylinders 15 and 16, a. spacing member 2& being provided which extends between the cylinders and through which-a locking pin 25 which is attached to a chain26'may extend.
From the foregoing descriptionof the various parts of the'device the operation thereof may be readily understood.
The plate 1 with the bracket 2 is always biles, a bracket carried'by the hub plateof in position on the wheel andthe pump may be carried underneath the running-board -or it maybe carried elsewhereion-the automobile. If now-a tire needs inflating the pump is secured to the bracket 18 by passing the pin 20through=the opening, 21" in the base 21 of the pump and inserting the locking pin 22, the opposite end :of the pump being placed iniposition, as: described, and the chain 26 beingbro ughtiaroun'dun- -derneath the 1 pump, when the pin 25 may be inserted'in the opening-in the spacing inember 2 i jthus locking the pump securely inpositi'o'n. The crank pins3 may now be connected to the connecting pin 2 1 and the 1 nected with said crankgpm.
pin 7 may be inserted in the opening 6* where it may be securely held by the set screw '6, see Figs. 1 and 2. During the .placing of the pitman in place, the set screw 17 is loosened so that part may be adjusted to the right length, and then the set screw is tighte'i'led. The automobile is acked up soas to liftthe rear wheel WV from the ground and the engine is started.
Owing to the constructionof the .pitman the pivotal :connection of the'cross-head 12 need not be exactly in a-linement. with the ,pivotal connectionof .thepitman with the crank .pin. Nevertheless, the pitman *will transmit rotary movement oi": the wheel-to .the pumpwithout binding and without lost motion. 7
When the wheel is pumped up, the-two set screws 3 and 6 may be unloosened, and the pitman instantly removed. The removal of the pump of course is the work of .a moment in withdrawing the locking pins which hold thepump vto the brackets.
