HOMER r. MARSHALL, or NORTH ADAMS, MAssAoHUsETTs.
PICKER-stuck Fon Looivis.
Application filed November 1, l1&19. Serial No. 334,942..
To @ZZ whom i may concern Be it known that I, Hoi/ mn F. MARSHALL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picker- Sticks for Looms, of which the following is a specification. 'Y
The general object of my present sole invention is the provision of a picker stick of durable construction that will meet all of the practical requirements of a picker stick, and be adapted'to be operated in the ordinary well known manner. y v
To the attainment of therforegoing, the invention consists in the embodiment as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure l is a perspective of the pickerl stick constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised.
Fig. 2 is a ful/l longitudinal section of the same.
Fig. 3 is Fig. 2 and illustrating the socketing and fastening of the breakable wooden portion of the stick in the metallic holder for said portion. Y
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings. Y
As is well known to those skilled in the art, it is desirable under some conditions for a picker stick to break, and therefore my invention contemplatesithe employment in my novel stick of a comparatively short upper wooden section 1V. It will be appreciated, however, that the breaking of the section l will not entail Vserious loss either of time or material, inasmuch as according to my invention the said section 1 is adapted to be expeditiously and easily removed, and as readily replaced with a new section without the employment of skilled labor.
In addition to the section 1, my novelv Y picker-stick comprises a metallic holder 2 for the section l; the said holder 2' being tubular so as to combine the .necessaryl strength and resiliencyv required in picker sticks. The holder 2 comprises a lower `an enlarged detail longitudinalA section taken in a plane at right angles to major portion 3, of circular form and comparatively large size in cross-section, and anupper socket-portion 4; the latter. being, by preference, of rectangular form in crosssection so as to snugly receive and hug and strongly hold the lower portion of the wooden section l. Asshown in Fig. 3, the lower end of the wood section l is opposed to shoulders 5 in the holder, which shoulders constitute a stop for the wooden section. Any suitable means may be employed to fasten the woodenV section l in the socket portion 4, though I prefer to employ forthe purpose the removable bolt 6, equipped with a nut 7.
At a point slightly below the socket portion 4, the holder portion 3 is provided with a vertical series of threadedV apertures 8; this provision being made forl the adjustable connection through the medium of ascrew (not shown) of a sweep-stick strap, (also not shown), 1 Y
Also V'comprised in my novel stick is a rocker-bearing 9, preferably of cast metal, and having a cylindrical terminalportion l0 disposed in and braZed to or otherwise iXe'dly associated with the holder portion My novel holder 2 is preferably formed of steel, and is practically unbreakable. It isalso adapted to withstand the wear and strains to which picker sticks are ordinarily subjected, but notwithstanding this, it is light in weight and at the same time is possessed of suficient resiliency to render the picker stick as a whole suliciently springy, as is desirable. It will also be appreciated that the wooden section l of the stick is adapted to Ybreak under certain conditions,l
and thereby avert damage to more important parts of a loom, but this breakage will not entail serious loss, inasmuch as the secf kthe said section may be quickly and conveniently removed and replaced with a new section; It will be further noticed, however,
rin this connection that the socketing of the lower portion of the wooden section -l in the holder e., therarrangement of the base of the woodenvsection 1 in a pocket or socket r orFiclE. I
of the holder 2, enables the said holder 2 to reinforce and to lend increased strength te the section l, so that while the resiliency of the stick throughout is preserved, the lia. bility of the section 1 breaking under slight strains is reduced to a minimum.
In addition to the practical advantages.
hereinbefore ascribed to my novel picker stick, it will be manifest that the stick is capable of being installed quickly with the same facility as an ordinary picker stick, and is adapted to be operated in the same manner and by the same means as an ordinary picker stick. y
Havingv described my invention, what I looms comprising a lower tubular portion 2o and an upper socket or pocket portion of rectangular form in cross-section to receive and surround and reinforce the lower portion of a wooden picker stick section, and a rocker bearing having a cylindricalterminal portion disposed in and brazed to the lower end of the tubular portion of the holder.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
HOMER F.'MARSHALL.
