WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.H, 1919.

OLIVER R. JONES, or WELLAND, ONTARIO; CANADA.
WRENCH.
Application filed August 11, 1919. Serial No. 316,769.
1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, @mvnn ll. JONES, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Welland, in the county of vVelland and Province of ()ntario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and consists essentially of a handle having means for permitting the jaws to slide longitudinally thereupon.
The object of the invention is to provide wrench which will, to a considerable ex; tent, enable the user to complete an entlre revolution in the rotation of an object engaged therewith, without relieving or loosenthe grip, in positions where adjacent obstru tiens would ordinarily interferewith the movement of the handle of an ordinary wrench.
A further object is to provide a wrench of the class specified which may be, if desired, adjusted so that the jaws are rigid with the handle.
A still further object is to provide such a device which will be simple, durable, efiicient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
These, together with other objects, may obtained by the construction, combination and arrangement of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Reference may now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1. is a side view of the improved wrench; and,
Fig. 2- is an end view of the same. v
Similar reference characters refer to simi lar parts throughout the two views.
Primarily, it is particularly desired to point out that, although the wrench illustrated in the drawing is an alligator or pipe type, the present invention, herein after to be set forth, may be applied to any type of wrench regardless of'its nature, or of the nature of its aws, which may be fixed oradj u stable, the wrench shown in the drawing being chosen only by way of example.
The smooth and serrated jaws of the wrench are-indicated respectively by A and B. 7 These parts as shown are integral' 0.
designates the handle, which is provided with lateral opposed longitudinal grooves 2. The body portion of the jaws A, B, is longitudinally slotted as indicated by 3, and is provided with flanges 4- which fit the grooves 2 in the handle and are slidable therein. I
Thus it will be seen that in rotating an object, should the handle G come in contact with an obstruction, the handle may slide along the jaws until it misses the same, when. rotation may be resumed.
In the event of it being desired to procure rigidity between the jaws and their handle,
a set screw 6 is threaded through the body portion of the aws, with contact against the handle.
Having now fully described my inven tion, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a device of the class described, com
prising a bar handle member regular in cross-section from end to end, a jaw-carrying member slidable on said. handle from one extreme end to the other to a position when at said ends the edge of said jawcarrying member is flush with the corresponding end. of said bar handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have itfliXQd. my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
