Be it known that I, THOMAS 1V. TWYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avella, in the county of WVashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Trolley-fire and Guard Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hangers and more particularly to a combined trolley wire and guard hanger especially designed for use in coal mines.
In practice, the trolley wire hangers now so generally employed in coal mines are in many instances secured directly to the coal, constituting the roof of an opening, and under my invention I also secure the hangers to the roof.
It is required that the trolley wire be protected especially at cross-overs to prevent operators from coming into contact therewith, and this protection has been attempted to be accomplished by the employment of guard boards disposed on both sides of the wire and projecting below the plane in which the wire is located. However, considerable trouble has arisen from the use of the guard boards, due to the inability to keep them in the desired position and the trouble and expense heretofore encountered in putting up or placing the guards in position.
The prime objects of the present invention are to provide simple and eflicient means for securely supporting these guards, and at the same time to lessen the labor and expense of placing the guards in position; and to provide a new and improved combined trolley wire and guard hanger construction.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the roof of an opening in a coal mine, the opening being designed to permit the passage of electrically propelled vehicles; 2 the trolley wire, and 3 guards disposed on either side of the wire and preferably extending below the plane in which the wire is disposed.

be of any desired construction capable of being securely attached to the roof 1. As illustrated, it includes an outer hollow split casing or sleeve 5, an interiorly disposed wedge shaped nut 6, said nut having its central bore threaded, and an exteriorly threaded rod or bolt 7. The threads 8 of bolt 7 are adapted to engage with the threads of the nut 6 for the purpose of adjusting said nut within the split hollow sleeve as desired.
As shown, the anchor structure is designed to be positioned within a pre-formed hole in the coal roof. Detachably secured to the lower end of the bolt 7 of the anchor structure is a head 9. 1O designates a clamp device adapted to engage the trolley wire 2, said clamp device being connected with the head 9 by means of a threaded member 11.
The means for supporting the guard members 3 include a bracket 12, said bracket being mounted on the upper end of the head 9. As illustrated, the bracket includes a horizontally extending portion 13 having a central aperture 1 1 and two depending arms 15, the latter being bent at their lower portions to form board receiving pockets 16. As shown, the guard boards 3 are cut awa at 17, at which points they are fitted into the depending arms. 18 designates strengthen ing ribs disposed at the junctures of the horizontally extending portion 13 and the depending portions 15 of the bracket.
19 designates a spring interposed between the upper surface of the portion 13 of the bracket and a washer or other suitable contact device 20 designed to be held against the lower end of the casing 5 of the anchor structure. Spring 19 is designed to aid in maintaining the anchor structure in position, and also functions to maintain the bracket 12 in position by pressure exerted against said parts. Screws 21, passed through openings in the top wall of the pockets 16 and entered in the guards, may be employed to aid in preventing the guards from moving relatively to the bracket.
From the above, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and efficient structure for supporting both the trolley wire and the guards and that the assembled structure may be positioned as a unit, thereby eliminating the employment of separate means for supporting the wire and the guards. Further, that the guards will always be maintained in the desired positions relatively to the wire.
What I claim is 1. In a combined trolley wire and guard hanger, the combination with an anchor structure or" means carried by the anchor for supporting the trolley wire and means carried by the said anchor for supporting a trolley Wire guard, said latter supporting means including a bracket having spaced apart depending arms,'anda spring interposed between the bracket and anchor structure and exerting pressure on both to aid in maintaining said structure and bracket in position.
