The present invention relates to improvements in guards for use in mines, to give protection against contact with the trolley wire or other charged conductor.
One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a trolley Wire guard of the above mentioned character that can be readily and easily attached to the hangers used in supporting the trolley wire from the roof of the mine without necessitating any alterations.
Still a further object is to provide a trolley wire guard of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable, and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the nature of the invention proceeds and when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings; forming a part of this application, and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trolley wire guard embodying my invention, showing the same attached to a hanger and suspended from the mine roof.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the guard per se.
Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially upon the line 1 -4: of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the reinforcing strips associated with each of the side boards constituting the guards per se.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a conventional hanger that is suspended 45 from the roof of a mine, and connected to the bottom of the hanger in the usual manner is the trolley wire 2, the clamping means for the trolley wire which is associated with the hanger 1 being illustrated at 3, in Figure 3. 50 The circular rim portion that extends around the bottom of the hanger body is indicated at 4:.
My improved guard comprises the sideV boards 5 and 6 that constitute the guards per se, these side boards being adapted to extend for the full length of the trolley'wire, and it is of course understood that the side boards are constructed in section,'one section being preferably of such length as to extend a considerable distance and any appropriate mea-ns 6o may be provided for securing the adjacent ends of the sections of the side boards together.
My guard further includes the provision of a particular means for mounting the guard board on the trolley wire Vhangers and -to this end, thereis provided a pair'of bolts 7 and 8, respectively, that extend transversely through suitable openings provided therefor in the opposed side boards 5 and 6, adjacent (0 the upper edge thereof and onopposite sides of the vhanger 1. These bolts also project through reinforcing strips v9 that are secured on the inner and outer faces ofeach side board by the fastening means illustrated at 10. The ends of each bolt are threaded for receiving thereon the clamping nuts 11.
The bracket structures further provision of the opposed arcuate shaped jaw members 12 and 13, each of which'is of identical con- 80 struction and the inner face of each jaw is provided with a groove to fit theV rim portion 4 of the hanger 1, in the manner as clearly disclosed in Figures 3 and l of the drawings.
These complementary jaw members enclose a considerable portion of the rim 4.
Outwardly extending arms 15 and 16 are formed on the respective end portions of each jaw member. A relatively sm'allapertured lug y17 is formed on the end of each of the 90 arms 15, while larger apertured lugs`18 are formed on the outer ends of the arms 16 and as is clearly indicated in Figure 2, the arms 16 ofthe opposed jaw members are arranged in diagonally opposed relation with respect '95 to each other and obviously the arm members 15 are also arranged in diagonally opposed relation. The lugs 17 and 18 are slidable on the respective bolts between the guide boards 5.
In order to further brace the guide boards, each arcuate shapedjaw member is formed at its central portion on the outer face thereof with a boss 19, which is engaged by the respective side boards when the parts are properly adjusted.
I/Vhen the guard boards 5 and' are properly positioned on opposite sides of the con- V ductor member 2 and the jaw members are tightly grippedaround the rim portion I and held in this manner by means of the'nut ll, it will be observed that the lower edges of the side boards extend considerably below the conductor wire 2, Vand therefore any object passing beneath the trolley wire will be prevented from engaging therewith.
The simplicity of my improved guard enables the same to be readily and easily installed and will not necessitate any alteration of the trolley wire hangers with which said guard is associated. Furthermore, my trolley wire guard will atall times be positive and eflicient in carrying-.out the purposes for which it is vdesigned and the necessary adjustments can be made readily and easily. ,A structure of this character will furthermore be strong and durable and yet inexpensive. v
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that Various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
I claim f A trolley wire guard comprising a pair of opposed arcuate straight jaws adapted to grip the rim portions of a trolley hanger therebetween, said jaws being vprovided at their respective ends' with a pair of laterally extending arms and rearwardly disposed lugs formed integralwith the arms adjacent their respective outer ends to provide slide bearings, the lugs of one pair of diagonally dis- Y, posed arms being considerably longer than the lugs of the other pair of arms, a bolt extending'through and beyond each pair of opposing lugs of the said jaws and having its opposite end threaded, al pair of spaced guard boards respectively mounted on corresponding threaded endsfof the bolts, and a pair of clamping members on each threaded end of the bolt and engaging opposite faces of av guard board.
