STOVEPIPE-LOCKING DEVICE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application filed August 10, 1908. Serial No. 447,660.
To all whom it' may concer/n:
Be it known that I, wenn W. Horan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of I'Iennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Stcvcpipc- Looking Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to stove pipe locking devices, and is in the nature of an improvement on the devices set forth and claimed in my prior United States Patent 891,480, is* sued of date June 23, 1908.
The invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like chznacters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a view cliiefiy in side elevation, but fith some parts sectional and with some parts broken away, illustratingI my improved stove pipe locking device applieci in working position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section talzen on the line x2-x2 of Fig. l. Ifig. 3 is a detail view showing the position of one of the anchoring wires and the split end of the bolt to which it is connected. Fig. 4 is a section taiien on a line n64- x4 of Fig. 3.
The numeral 1 indicates a portion of a stove, such as a sheet iron heater, and the numeral 2 `indicates a chimney having the usual pipe flue, preferably lined by a cylindrical sheet metal pipe thimble 3.
The numeral e indicates the vertical portion, the numeral 5 indicates the horizontal portionand the numeral 6 the elbow portion of a stove pipe that leads from the flanged smoke outlet assage 1EL of the stove l into the chimney ue 3. The elbow portion 6 is shown as a jointed elbow and it will of course, be understood, that the vertical and horizontal portions 4 and respectively, each may be made up of any desired number of pipe sections or joints of standard or of any suitable construction. Rotatively mounted in, and extended diametrically through the lower part of the vertical portion Il of the stove pipe, is a windlass shaft 7, which is preferaby of the construction disclosed in my said prior patent, and which is adapted to be held against rotation by means of a loch dog S, that engages a small ratchet wheel 9 on one end of said windlass shaft. The numeral l() indicates a bail to which as shown the lock dog 8 is pivotally connected, the ends of said bail being mounted on the pro* jecting end of said shaft. Said shaft 7, as in the prior patent, should be provided with a finger piece at one end, by means of which it may be rotated. Extended transversely through one of the joints of the pipe elbow 6 is a bolt 1l, on the central portion of which a guide sheave 12 is loosely journaled.
A wire or small metallic cable 13 is attached at its lower end to the central portion of the windlass shaft 7, and is passed over the guide sheave IZ. The construction so far described, is that of my said prior patent. In the said prior patent however, the upper end of the cable was connected to an anchor bar, which in turn, was applied inside of the main iluc of the chimney. This necessitated tightening of the lookin g device to rigidly secure sections of the pipe together as the pipe was inserted into the pipe flue of the chimney. In practice, I have found it to be a very much easier matter to tighten the lock device and to rigidly secure together the sections of the pipe before the pipe is raised or applied in operative position, and hence as the feature of my present invention, I provide a so called supplemental lock device, which may be applied to the chimney before the pipe is applied thereto and which may be connected directly or indirectly to the main locking device, after the latter has been tightened to lock together the sections of the pipe. This permits the main locking device to be .employed to lock together the stove pipe sections before the said stove pipe is raised or applied either to the stove o1` to the chimney. As preferably constructed, this supplemental locking device comprises an anchor bar 14 and a pair of wires or small cables 15- attached thereto. To afford a convenient connection between the main and the supplemental locking devices, a bolt 16 is passed diametrically through the extended end of the horizontal portion 5 of the stove pipe and the upper end of the wire or cable 13 is attached to the intermediate portion thereof. The ends of this bolt 16 are slit as shown at 17, so that they are adapted to receive the outer ends ot the short Wires 15. Furthermore, the slit ends of said bolt 16 are threaded and provided With nuts 18, Which when tightened, rigidly clamp the Wires 15 against the inner extremities of the slits 17, and thus rigidly lock the main and the supplemental locking devices together.
As is evident, When the delivery end oiC the stove pipe is inserted into the fine 3, and the Wires 15 are secure@` to the bolt 16 by the nuts 18, as shown in the drawings, said pipe Will be Jfirmly locked to the chimney and the said Wires 15 and holt 16 constitute an extension ofthe main lock device.
The Wires 15 may he connected to the Wire 13 in various different Ways, all within the scope of my invention. For instance, said Wire 15 might he twisted or lient around the ends of the holt 16, hut this would not be as good construction as that illustrated in the drawings. The supplemental loci; device arranged to operate as above descrihed, constitutes an important improvement on the lock device disclosed and broadly claimed in my prior patent alcove identified.
vl/*hat 1 claim is:
1. The combination With a chimliey i'lne and a sectional stove pipe discharging into the same, of an anchoring holt extended through the upper end or discharge section of said pipe, a main cable or Wire located Within and extended through said pipe anc anchored at one end to said anchor holt, a in at its other end to the lower end or receivinsection of said pipe, an anchor sar engageahle with the said chimney iiue, and a pair oi Wires connected to said anchor har and secured to the ends of said anchor bolt outside of said pipe.
2. rThe combination With a sectional stove pipe, of anchor bolts extended transversely through the end sections of said pipe, a main Wire or cable extended through said pipe and anchored at its ends to said bolts, the said anchor holt in the upper end section of said pipe having slit ends and provided with clampinfy nuts, and a supplemental lock device, comprising an anchor bar and a pair of wires connected thereto, the outer ends ot which Wires are passed through the slit ends of said anchor bolt and are rigidly lout detachahlv clamped thereto by the said clamping nuts.
3. The combination with a chimney flue and a sectional stove pipe having-an elbow and arranged to discharge into said iue, oi a Windlass and an anchor bolt mounted in said pipe, a sheave equipped holt mounted in said elbow, a man wire or cable located in said pipe and elbow and connected to said anchor holt and to said Windlass and passed over said she-ave and arranged to be tightened by said Windiass and a supplemental lool; device comprising an anchor engageahle with said chimney flue, a pair of Wires and means for detachably securing the outer ends et said Wires to the ends of said anchor holt outside ot said pipe,
1n timony whereof 1 alli); my signature in presence oil two Witnesses.
