K. V. RUDINI CALCULATING MACHINE. APPLICATION FILED APR.2, 1919.
1,352,029, Patented sept. 7,1920.l
DDDDDUDDDD MINIMUM QECIDCIEEIEEQEQ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KARL VIKTOR RUDIN', 0F STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.
CALCULATING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
Application led April 2, 1919. Serial No. 287,036.
tenths and hundreds of the multiplier. An
example of this type of machine is disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States No.
967 ,821. granted to F. Naumann, August 16,
1910. It has been proposed to provide the carriage with keys for shifting the s ame, whereby the carriage is locked in posltion while calculating operations are being performed. It has also been proposed to provide means whereby the locking device may be withdrawn independent of the shifting mechanism to allow the free shift of the carriage throughout any portion of its travel.
The essential feature of my invention consists therein that the usual shifting mechanism is arranged in such a way that the mechanism in order to release and shift the carriage must be actuated in two directions at least. suitably in vertical as well as in horizontal way.
For the purpose of explaining the inven` tion one example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing in which the samey letters of refernece have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parte.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a view in plan of a calculating machine provided with my present shifting mechanism` Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed sectional front-views showing the mechanism in two diEerent positions` and Fig. 4 is a detailed view in plan partly in section of the mechanism.
The calculating machine consists in usual manner of a setting mechanism and a registering mechanism. The latter is in known manner provided with the mechanism for shifting the carriage.
Said mechanism is indicated by the numeral 1 and consists of a horizontal bar, provided with two elevations or ridges 2, 3,
serving as resting surfaces for the pressure caused by the operator in that direction in which the carriage is to be moved after having been unlatched or released. The usual locking device, movable in vertical direction of the carriage, is indicated by the numeral 4 and is outside the plate 5, bearing the mechanism, actuated by the plate or shifting member l, suitably by means of a fiap or such like 6, extending downward from the shifting member. Said Hap or member is provided with two arms i", which arms are pivotally mounted on a shaft 13, mounted in the frame. By means of said arms the member 1 is adapted for vertical angular movement. The arms pass through slits or openings 8 in the plate 5. Below the member 1 an arm 9 is pivotally mounted on the plate 5. Said arm is also arranged for vertical angular movement in a plane at right angles to that of the member 1. Said armv isarranged under the member or its 6 and over the arm 4 of the usual lockmg device 4 and is on the other side of said member (reckoned from its pivot), provided with a pivoted tooth or shoulder 10. This tooth or shoulder is actuated by a spring 11, which tends to hold the same in a vertical middle-position. Said spring also tends to move the arm 9 back into its resting position. When the carriage is unlatched or released said tooth or shoulder engages a tooth of the usual rack 12 and according to the direction of movement of the 'carriage pushes against the nearest adjacent tooth in the direction of movement.
In order to limit the movement of the arm 9, pins or studs 14, 15 are provided. In the same way pins or studs 16, 17 are provided for limiting the movement of the tooth or shoulder 10.
All the parts except the lever 1 and the member of the carriage adapted to be actuated are covered by the protecting plate 18.
The function of the arrangement is as follows If for instance the carriage is to be shifted one step to the right, the operator pushes with his finger suitably against the bar or plate (Figs. 1 and 2). The finger can, without -difficulty be placed anywhere upon the lever, for instance upon the inside of the ridge 2. By pressing the lever or bar downward the same turns upon its shaft or pin 13 and unlatches through the intermediary of the flap 6 the vertical locking member 4 'from its corresponding groove in a series of grooves (Fig. a). As soon as this is done the carriage is shifted on accoiint of the pressure of the finger upon the member l in horizontal direction to the right, whereby' at the same time the arm 9 is pressed downward and brings the tooth l0 into a space or tooth in a rack l2; The movement of the carriage cannot, however, continue tar- Atherthan one space or tooth in the raelr l2,
as the tooth l0 When said space has been passed pushes against the next adjacent tooth of the racltlQ (Fig. 2), and on account of its being squeezed between the last mentioned tooth and the pin 17 stops the carriage. lWhen hereafter the pressureV against the member l ceases, the arm 9 with the tooth l0 is moved back into its original position7 whereby the locking mechanism 4t reliably takes part in the movement upward. Hence a reliable Asecuring or locking of the carriage in `the Vshifted position is attained.
It is evident that the arrangement can be modified in many various Ways Without deviating from the principle of the invention.
What l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. Calculating machine carriage shitting mechanism, comprising a finger bar arranged for longitudinal and for vertical movement, a shaft, a iiap" under the linger bar and having lateral arms pivotally mounted on the shaft, a lever bar pivotally mounted at 'one end, arranged under the flap and for vertical angular movement in a plane at right angles to that of the flap, and a springheld tooth pivotally mounted at the tree end ot the lever bar, in combination With a rack and a locking lever, said locking lever being at right angles to and 'under the said lever bar. f
2. Calculating machine carriage shitting mechanism, comprising a finger bar arranged or longitudinal and for vertical movement, a shaft, a iap under the linger bai` and having lateral arms pivotally inounted on the shaft, a lever bar pivotally mounted at one end, arranged under the flap and for vertical angular movement in a plane at right angles to that of the flap, 'a tooth pivotally mounted at the tree endet the lover bar, and a spring to normally hold said tooth in one position, in combination With a rack and a locking lever, said locking lever-'being at right angles to and under the said lever bar.
