To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. WILsON, of Niles, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Pocket-Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide a safety attachment for pocketbooks capable of being locked either by a single device or by a combination of separate devices, whereby the surreptitious removal of the pocketbook is rendered exceedingly diflicult, if not impossible.

The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.

' Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a pocketbook on the side 2 of which is secured a plate 3 whereon are mounted two pivoted arms 4 to the ends of which are secured the inner ends of two long, curved sharppointed fingers 5, the ends of which are normally -within and guided by housings 6 formed by turning over opposite corners of plate 3. The arms 4 are preferably pivoted by having small flanged portions extended into openings in plate 3, being held between the latter and the side of the pocketbook. These arms are engaged by a longitudinally movable slide 7 formed at its lower end with a transverse slot 8 to receive flanged ends 9 of said arms. The slide 7 extends longitudinally of the upper portion of plate 3, and its narrowed portion is extended through a slot in said latter plate. At its extreme upper end the slide is provided with a plate or plates 10 having opposite grooves 12 formed near its upper end. When the slide 7 is pressed inwardly, as against the tension of spring 13, the pointed fingers are projected laterally so as to engage the lining or pocket of a coat. spring-actuated locking lever 14 enters the space 12 between the top of the plate 10 and the upper flanged end of slide 7, thereby holding the slide inwardly, with the fingers extended. To release the slide it is necessary to bear on the spring'actuated lever so as to disengage it from the former. I have shown this lever as being mounted between a plate 15 and the upper When this occurs one end of a' flanged end of plate 3, plate 15 being secured to plate 3 and resting on the end of the pocketbook.

To provide auxiliary locking meansso as to prevent the surreptitious removal of the pocketbook, additional levers 16 and 16' are mounted similarly to lever 14, the lovers 16 at one end being designed to enter one of the grooves 12 of the slide when its free end is forced toward the latter, and the lever 16, like lever 14, entering the space 12. These levers are not spring-actuated, as is the lever 14, and hence it is necessary to release each of them, as well as to bear on the spring-actuated lever before the slide may automatically move outwardly under the tension of spring 13. For all ordinary uses but one of the locking levers is required, to wit, that which is automatically caused to engage the slide under the action of its spring. The spring 13 is shown as being secured at one end to plate 3, while its free end takes under a lip 17 of the slide.

The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art.

It is manifest that the device may be applied to any pocketbook; that the pointed ends of the locking fingers, when the device is not in use, are housed, thereby nary precaution is necessary, the single spring-actuatedlocking lever will serve every purpose.

It is manifest that any one of the locking devices may be equipped with a spring,.it not being essential to confine the use of the latter to the lever 14. .In this way the surreptitious removal of the pocketbook by one more or less familiar with the operation of the attachment will not be a matter of easy accomplishment.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with a pocketbook, of a plate secured thereto, oppositely extended fingers pivotally mounted on such plate, a slide for actuating said fingers, a spring acting on said slide to normally hold said fingers retracted, and a spring-actuated catch for engaging and holding such slide.

2. The combination with a pocketbook, of a plate secured thereto, oppositely extended fingers pivotally mounted on such plate, a spring-held slide for actuating such fingers and normally holding them retracted, springnc tuated locking devices for engaging and holding said slide, and an auxiliary locking device carried by said plate for also engaging and holding such slide.

3.
