Description

Margh 18 1924,
Filed Dec. 13. 1921 Fly-2 F. STEMMLER CALCULATING MACHINE witnesses:
anventor Ferdinand Stemmler Patented Mar. 18, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND STEMMLER, OF BRUNSWICK, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR T GRIMME NATALIS & 00., AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, OF BRUNSWICK, GERMANY, A CORPORATION OF GERMANY.
CALCULATING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FERDINAND STEMMLER, residing at Brunswick, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in calculating machines, and more particularly in calculating machines of the type in which two registering mechanisms are provided for cooperation with the setting mechanism, and the object of the improvements is to provide a machine of this type in which one of the registering mechanisms is adapted to be thrown out of operative relation to the setting mechanism. With this object in view my invention consists in the matters to be described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate correspondu ingparts. In said drawing,-
1g. 1, is a side view of the setting mechanism, the registering mechanisms and the slide carrying the same showing both registering mechanisms in position for cooperation with the setting mechanism,
Fig. 2, is a similar side view showing the upper one of the registering mechanisms in inoperative position, and
Fi 3, is a front view partly in section showing the carriage and subsidiary slide carrying the registering mechanisms.
In the example shown in the figures the registering mechanisms represented in a diagrammatical way by the numeral wheels a and b are mounted on a carriage or slide 0 adapted to be shifted longitudinally of the setting mechanism 1' as is known in the art.-
The carriage c is provided with uprights 0 each formed with a shoulder 6 providing ide ways for a subsidiary slide (1 having i e upper registering mechanism a mounted on lateral uprights d and shiftable transversely of the carriage c. In the position of the slide (1 shown in Fig. 1 the registering mechanism a is adapted for cooperation with the setting mechanism, while Fig. 2 shows the same 1n inoperative position. The uprights d are provided with pins f engagin in guide slots 9 of the uprlghts 0 and W1 Serial No. 522,174.
one of two sockets m. By rocking the shaft Zthe slide (5 is shifted into the position shown in Fig. l or into the position shown in Fig. 2, and it is locked in set position by means of the spring pressed bolt n engaging in either one of the sockets m. It will be understood that the registering mechanism is always in a position exactly parallel to the setting mechanism, so that a proper engagement or disengagement of the registering and setting mechanisms is insured.
While in describing the invention reference has been made to a preferred embodiment thereof I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the figures and that various changes may be made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the construction of its parts without departing from the invention. For example, in some cases the rock shaft Z and associated parts are dispensed with, the slide (1 being shifted by means of suitable hand pieces secured to the ends of the slide.
I claim: Y
1. In a calculating machine, the combination, with the setting mechanism, of two registering mechanisms, means independent of each other operatively connecting said setting mechanism with both registering mechanisms, means to render the setting mechanism inoperative relatively to one of said registering mechanisms, and means to lock the shiftable registering mechanism in its connected and disconnected positions.
2. In a calculating machine, the combination, with the setting mechanism, of two registering mechanisms cooperating with said setting mechanism, a carriage on which one of said re istering mechanisms is mounted and move 1e longitudinally of the setting mechanism, and a slide movable on said carriage and carrying the other one of the registering mechanisms.
3. In a calculating machine, the combination, with the setting mechanism, of two registering mechanisms cooperating with said setting mechanism, a carriage on which one of said registering mechanisms is mounted and movable longitudinally of the setting mechanism, and a slide movable on said carriage transversely of the setting mechanism and carrying the other one of the registering mechanisms.
e. In a calculating machine, the combination, with the setting mechanism, of two registering mechanisms cooperating with the setting mechanism, a carriage on which one of said registering mechanisms is mounted and movable longitudinally of said setting mechanism, a slide movable on said carriage transversely of the setting mechanism and carrying the other one of the registering mechanisms, a rock shaft on said carriage operatively connected with the slide at both ends thereof for moving the same, and an operating member connected with the rock shaft.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND STEMMLER. Witnesses:
AUGUST Hsnuao'rn, MARIA HEYDEIKE.
