NUTCRACK'ER.
Application filed .Tune 22, 1916, Serial No. 105,119. Renewed April 14. 1920.
To all ywiz/0.12.1 t may concern lle it lrnown that l, SAMUEL L. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States. residing at ldoorestown, and `State of New Jersey, have invented cer-Y tain new and useful linprovenientsin Nutcfliers. whereof the following is a specilion, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates particularly to that a of nnt crackers that are designed to l. in "he hand of the operator and espef auapted for household or Vtable use.
rl'he principal objects of my invention are to provide a nut cracher that will so engage a nut as to eiliciently crush the shell in such a direction with resneot to the longitudinal axis of the nut as to cause it to bulge uniformly and crumble without injury to the kernel.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a nut cracker which may be adjusted to automatically accommodate nuts of widely different sizes and shapes, and so designed as to avoid ay possible injury to the operator.
My invention further comprehends a nut cracher having jaws arranged to engage the nut in zones intermediate of its ends.
Speciiically stated the formof my invention hereii l described comprises relatively opposed jaws movable linearly with respect to each other by relativ ly movable handles having ratch and pawl mechanism wherel oy their relative successive oscillation ene-ots a relative linear approach of the jaws step by step.
lily invention also includes all of the various novel features of construction and arrangement as hereinafter more deliniteiy specified.
in the accompanying drawing, Figure 1, s a plan view of a nut cracker constructed n accorilance with my invention, showing n dot and dash lines. a nut engaged theren; Fig. 2, is a side elevational view of the structure shown in Fig. l; Fig. 3, isa transverse-vertical sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in F 2 andshowing the inner face of the stationary j a v; F ig. 4, is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line f in Fig. 2.
ln said ligures the frame l is preferably formed of channel bar and has its forward i i i i Specification of Letter in the county of Burlingtoir a'tentlfatented pt. 7', le20.
sei-iai no. 373.933.
linearly with respect thereto is the jaw T which is carried by the crosshead 9 enibracing the fraine l and arranged to slide longitudinally thereon toward and away from said jaw i and having the inturned tail piece lo which is connected with the crossbar l2 between the depending' flanges 13 of the frame l, by the coiled spring l5 which tends to draw the jaw T toward the jaw :2 into engagement with the nut 16 which may be of any size or form.
rilie cross-head 9 is provided with the pintle l? upon which the movable handle 19 is arranged to roclr, and said handle 19 carries the pawl :20 which is mounted to swing upon the pintie 2l and which has its free edge 22 engaging' `the teeth 6 of the ratch bar 5, so that when the handle 19 is rocked away from fh handle 3 the tooth engaging edge of d pawl will be shifted forward to engage the next forward tooth of the ratch, which when the handles are again caused to approach each other the jaw T is forced forward toward the jaw 2, employing the last tooth asan abutment.
rilhc handle 19 is normally separated from the handle 3 in opposition to the grip of the operator in the spring` 23 which is coiled around the pintle l? and extends oppositely frein the coil and. respectively engaged with said frame l and with the pivoted end of the pawl Q0 as shown in Fig. 2.
lt will he readily see that .by thus pressing upon the pivoted end of the pawl 2O the handle 3.9 forced away from the handle 3 by the spring Q3 whi`e the pawl Q0 is forced into engagement with the teeth 6. Said handle may be perforated as shown in l if desired. -is best shown in Fig. the aws 2 ano 'l' are provided with alined apertures 25 and 26 respectively which are preferably circular but which may be of any other desired configuration, of suchdimensionsas to perniit the ends of the nut to extend through so as to engage said nut as close as practical to its transverse medial plane.
By thus engaging the nut in zones intermediate oit its ends the shell is caused to bulge uniformly about its medial Zone, so
that when it crumbles the kernel may be eX- trac'ted intact. Y
do not desire to limit my invention to the precise details construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein Without departing from the essential features ,of the invention as delined in the ap-l tending to force said jaws together, a handle pivoted to said cross-head, a pawl pivotd to said handle and arranged to engage said frame to effect the progressive appreach of said jaws when said handles are relatively oscillated.
2. A-nut cracker having a Jrame provided separate said handles.
.of said jaws when said handles are relatively oscillated and a spring,- tending,` to
3. A nut cracker' having yopposed nut cracking jaws provided with means for reaining the nut, yielding means tending to force said nut crm-ing jaws together, and relatively movable handles arranged to elfect the approach of said aivs lineally.
ln testimony whereof, l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
