Application-filed October 27, 1919. Serial No. 333,839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAv A. LUND, a subject of the King of Norway, who have declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States, residing at Stillwater, in the county of lVashington and State olf lllinnesota, have invented a new and useful Padlock, of which the :following is a specilication.
My invention relates to pad-kicks, and the object is to provide a novel simple yet eflicient pad-lock.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is an end view of the improved lock looking toward the key-hole of it. Fig. 2 is a section on the line QWQ in Fig. l. Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 7 is the hollow shell or body of the lock and may be of cylindrical form; it is provided with two lugs 8, in which is pivoted at 9 a shackle l0, whose end ll extends through an aperture l2 in the shell and is provided with a recess 13 adapted to be engaged by the reduced end portion 14 olf a screw l5 which has very coarse threads in a partition 1G o'l the shell. rl`he other end oil the screw is formed with a stem 17, which in my drawing is shown to be four cornered, but it may in seine cases be tri angular', hexagon or of any other polygonal forni in the various locks. To prevent accidental or too easy rotation ot' the screw, a spring 1S is fixed in the shell and arranged. to press against one side of the round stein l-lv (see Fig. l). 4After said, screw and spring are inserted, the open end o'l.z the shell is closed by a bottom 1 9, iitted :into a recess 2() in the shell and beveled at its outward edge wl'iereupon the edge 2'1. ot' the shell is closed inward upon the beveled portion of the bottom, so that the bottom and the shell look as if they were cast in one piece.
The other end of the shell is provided with a slit-like key hole 22 which may be slightly enlarged in the middle, as at 23 'in Fig. 1 for the bar 24C ot a key 25, whose outer end 26 may be of any suitable form. The inward end of the key is flattened and formed into an arch 27, whose end portion 28 is provided with an aperture 28X adapted to lit upon the stem 17 of the screw and turn it.
To prevent picking' of the lock by false keys, the lock shell is provided .near the key hole with two internal segmental obstructing lugs 29 and 3l), and two longitudinal lugs or einbossnients 3l and .The latter has its inner end reduced to a radial rib 33, having an arm Sil extended to the center ol" the shell and there terminating in a disk 35 which serves as a guard against :false keys. In. the operation or use of the lock, the key is inserted. by hooking it into the shell over the` guard 3l), as shown in dotted lines 26 in Fig. 2; it is then brought to axial position, and thence to the position 26h, so its part. 2S will pass the guard The key is then brought to the axial position 2G and pushed upon the stem 17. Next the key is turned from the position 2l to the position flflx in Figs. 3 and (5, which turning is i'ully threesfourths olf a Atull rotation and :is suflicient to disengage the screw :troni the shackle 10, fil, and thus open the lock. In closing the lock, the key likewise inserted and turned in the opposite direction until it stops at the other side ott the arm 34. whereupon. it is removed from the lock.
Any suitable form of slviring may be used for throwing the shackle open when unlocked, but as such springs are not my in vention l have not shown or described the same.
What l claim is l. A padlock comprising an elongated hollow body with a slit-shapedkey-hole Ain one end and an aperture in one side near the other end oi" the body, a shackle pivoted to the shell and having its 'free end provided with a recess and arranged to swing into the aperture, said shell having near the aperture a partition, a screw threaded in the partition and provided at one end with a round stern adapted to enter the recess in the shackle, the other end being polygonal and adapted to be engaged by a key litting the polygonal form of the stein, a radial arm liked in the shell and having at its gg Y 1,3425632 and having alaterully arched end porton,
