V Appliaaon filed runen,
To czZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. DE CAMP, a citizen of the United States, residin at Blackwell, in the county of Kay and. tate of Oklahoma, have invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in Glass [Gaskets and Carriers Therefor, of which the following is a specification. L
This invention relates to improvements in glass caskets and carriers therefor, and so aras the casket itself is concerned, is designed as an improvement over the 4casket shown and described in my PatentNo. 1,211,684, issued January'), 1917. In-the patented structure the glass body and lid of the casket are bound or .confined Within` a frame comprising kan arrangement of metallic straps which are buried with the casket. Also in the patented structure the frame for the body includes a metallic strap xtending 'exteriorl-y around the ltop of the ody strapj extending around the bottom. of the said lid, these straps being connected at one side of the casket by 4suitable hinges, and certain of'tfhe straps of the respective frames being securfed to the said encircling or su rounding straps to be held in place thereby and also for the purpose of holding the said encircling or surrounding straps against displacement in the opening and closing of the vlid upon its hinges. Therefore, so far as the casket itself is concerned, the present invention has as its vobject to provide a less expensive construction by dis-` pensing with all of the frame straps with the exception of. the said encircling or surrounding' straps for the body and lid, novel meansl being provided by the present invention forsecuring these straps to the respective lcasket members,. i J y A further object of the invention is to provide a carrier within which'the casket may be bodily placed, the carrier being, however, only. temporarily connected with the casket so that prior to interment the said/ carrier may be separated from the casket and thus save a considerable quantity pf metal which would otherwise be' a total -oss v Another object ofthe invention is to pro- `v ide a casket carrier which may be highly ornamental in its embellishments and in itsell more or less expensive, and whlch, after il has'served its purpose and before :intern Specification of Letters Patent.
and the frame for the lid includesa ,Patented Aug. io, ieee..

ment, ,may be readily separated from the casket and reserved for future use.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the carrier may be c temporarily secured -upon the casket bodyand which" means will be inconspi'cuous.
A further object ofthe invention is the provision of 'novel means for securing a Wooden base against vthe under side of the bottom of the casket so as to provide against breakage.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspectiveview illustrating one embodiment of the present in- Fig.V 2 is a perspective viewillustrating the carrier removed from the casket;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the prol tective base member for the casket and thev means Uplace; 4 l
F ig, 4 is a vertical transverse sectional View through the casket and the carrier;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one end of the caskety with the carrier removed and also the protective basemember and the encircling bands or strapswhichlconstitute apart of the hinge connection between the lid and body of the casket;
Figli is a fragmentary perspective view illustratingL a portion of the securing means for the protective base member;
Fig. 7`is a vertical transverse sectional yiew takfen Asubstantially on the line 7-7 of ilig. 1. I
The body of the casket is indicated in general by the numeral 1 vand the lid by the numeral 2, and the said body includes sides 3, ends el, diagonal corner portions 5, and a loottomy. n like manner the lid of the er casket includes sides 7, ends 8, diagonal corner portions 9, and a top 10. `Exteriorly the walls 3, 4 and 5 of the body of the casket are formed at their upper edges with a continuously groove ll, and a similar rabbet or groove 12 is formed exteriorly in the Walls 7, 8 and 9 ot the lid at the lower edges thereof, each rabbet or groove defining a circumferential stop shoulder or ledge, as shown. within the rabbets or grooves 11 and l2 respectively, are bands or straps v13 and 14 the said bands or'straps extending respectively continuously around the body and the lid of the,Y casket. In order to secure the il() provided for securing the same in 75 extending shallow rabbet or Seated 1ct said straps in place, the corner portions and 9 of the body and lid arer formed each with a socket 15 into which is fitted a plug or bushing 16 preferably of hard rubber although any other suitable material may be employed for the purpose. Each'bushing 1.6 is formed with a socket 17 which opens through the outer end of the bushing and may either terminate short of the inner end thereof or open through said end. The outer ends of the bushings '16 terminate at the vertical walls of the rabbets 11 or v12 as the case may be, and are, consequently, held 'against displacement from the sockets 15 by the encircling'bands or straps.N At the points of location of the' bushings 16',l the said bands or 'straps are formed with openings 18 which are preferably threaded, andsecuring screws or bolts 19 are fitted into these openings and llB-and 14 and in this manner the lid of the casket is connected with the body for swinging movement to open and closed positions.
. From the foregoing" it will be understood that due to the provisionof the means abovev described for securing the straps or bands 13 and 14 inplace, the use of transversely extending straps or bands as in the patented structure is obviated. Of course, the structure illustrated and described in the patent is preferable as it is much more Substantial and, therefore, the improvements so far described are applicable chiefly to caskets which vare intended to be sold at a relatively low price or where, for other reasons, it is desirable or necessary to economize in the use of metal. It will, furthermore, be evident from an inspection 'of the drawings anda consideration of the description which is to follow relative to the cari-ier, that any other` type of carrier or any suitable casket harness may be employed. However, regardless of the employment of any particular .type of carrier or harness, it is desirable that the bottom of the `casket body be kprotected in the manner which will now` be explained. n i.
The protective `means above referred to comprises a base 21 which ispreferably of wood and of such dimensions as to cover the entire under surface of the bottom 6 of the body. In order to secure the base v21 in position there is provided aframe indicated in general by the numeral 22 and comprising ,an upstanding portion-'or i-ange 23 and a.
horizontally disposed flange 24. The flange is designed to surround the lower portion of the body of the casket and the margin of the protective baseV 21, While the flange 24 extends beneath the edge portion of the protective base, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. In order to suitably anchor the flange 24 to the protective base, it is preferable that the flange be provided at its edge, at suitable intervals,with upstanding spurs 25 which may enter the under side of thesaid protective base. In securing the flange 23 to the casket body, securing means identical with the securing meansshown in Fig. 7 of the drawings and heretofore described and' indicated in the said drawings by corresponding numerals, is employed,
the securing-screws or`bolts 19 of said means y passing through openings 26 formed at the proper points in the said flange 23.- As the flange 23 is onljfnf such height as to permit of 'the employment of the securing means above mentioned, and the flange 211 is relatively narrow, itwill be understood that the frame comprising these flanges will not only be inconspicuous but will, at the same time.l require but little metal for its manufacture, and yet it serves as a highly efficient means for securing the said protective base 21 in preferably connected by hinges 28 so that the sections may be swung together in applying the carrier to the casket body or swung apart in removing the-same vfrom the casket.' At its opposite end, one of these sectionsis preferably provided with one or more ears. 29 designed to -overlap-the corresponding end of the other section, and .suitable-securing screws or other elements 30 are fitted through the ears and into the said corresponding endx -Vo f' the other 'section in order to hold the sections closed about the body of the casket.
0f course, if desired, suitableV snap fastenings might be provided for the purpose of connecting the last-mentioned ends of the sections and, 1n fact, if desired, the hinges n.
might be replaced by some means for separably connecting the first-mentioned ends 28 of the said sections. y The sectionsv 27 are formed at their lower edgeswith inwardly projecting iianges 31 which are designed to l*entend beneath the flanges 24. of the protective base securing member 2:2-, as clearly shown 1n Fig. l of the drawings. The sections of the carrier are, as stated above, 5
formed of sheet metal. and these sections may beplain or highly ornamented as desired and as illustrated in Figs. 1 and2of the .the respective carrier drawings, the vupper edges of the sections m'ay be scalloped, undulated, or otherwise fashioned so as to impart an ornamental appearance to the carrier as a whole.
That wall of each section which extends beside the corresponding side wall of' the casket body is provided with means for temporary connection with the circumscribing .band 13 so that after the sections 4have been swung together to encompass the casket body, the said sections may be connected with vthe casket to prevent accidental displacement while the casket is being carried and up to the-time it is desired to permanently separate the carrier from the casket. lWhile various devices `may be provided for affording connection between the sections of the 'carrierand the said. band 13, it is preferable that means such as illustrated in the drawings be made use of. Any number of the connecting devices `may be employed between each section of the carrier and the binding strap 13. Eachl of the devices comrises a lever member indicated in general y the numeral 32 and pivotally or hingedly connected as 'at 33 withhthe upper edge of section, the lever member being adapted to be swung in a vertical direction. The'numeral 34 ii'idicates a hook member povided at .its lowen end with a fork, the arms 35 of whiclreare pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of the lever, member 32 and are spread suiiiciently to st'addle the pivotal or hinge connection 35 when the lever 32 is swung downwardly to lie against the outer face of the respective carrier section. The hook member 34 at its upper end is provided with a bill 3G and the said bill is designed to engage in a socket 37 formed by striking out the upper portion of the strap or band 13 at points corresponding to the points of location of the connecting devices when the carrier is in position encompassing the body-of the casket. It will .erence to Figs. l, 2 and particularly by ref- 4 of thel drawings, that when the lever members 32 are swung upwardly, the terminals of the bills 3G ofthe hook members 34 may be engaged over the now be understood and upper edges of the 'band 13 at the points of' location ofthe sockets 37, and when the lever members 32 are swung downwardly, the hook members 34 will be drawn in a corresponding direction causing the bills 36 to enter the sockets 37, and after the arms 35 of the forks of the hook members have passed the pivotal or hinge connections 33,
the pivots for the hook members 34 will have passed dead center and consequently the devices will be held against disarrangement until the leverlmembers 32 are manpositively swung outwardly to release the connecting devices from the band 13. In practice a strip offelt (not shown) will be applied between the strap or band 13 and the wall of the groove or rabbet l1 at the upper edge of the walls of the body of thecasket as in my prior patent heretofore mentioned, and it will be understo'odsthat vby providing the sockets 37 in the said vbami or strap 13, the bills of the hook members 34 may seat in the sockets without pushing ldown or otherwise distorting or tearing the felt strip. A
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. In a casket, a glass body and aglass lid each provided .at their abutting edges with a circumscribing seating groove detining a continuous stop shoulder, bands seated in said grooves and bearing againstthe stop shoulders, said body and lid being provided with transverse sockets formed in the Vexterior walls of the casket at said seating grooves, bushings fitting Within the Sockets and having their outer faces disposed substantially flush with the walls of engagement with said band, and an anchoring element extending through said band and fitting into the bushing, said band bearing against andforming a closure for the bushing. 1
