EDWARD P. NORTON, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Application filed January 13, 1920. Serial No. 351,230.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak land, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety razors and has for one of its objects the provision of means for locking the blade in the holder against accidental movement while using the device and which means is actuated or influenced by the movement or location of the handle, thus providing a device wherein any danger of the blade moving out of place after the assembly of the device is entirely obviated.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a safety razor of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and eiiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the follow ing description and accompanying drawings,
in which Figure l is a side elevation of a safety razor constructed in accordance with my in vention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the means of mounting the locking de vice on the shank of the razor.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a shank of substantially rectangular shape in cross section and has formed upon one end thereof a holder 2 including an inner plate 3 and an outer plate l. The inner and outer plates 3 and a are adapted to receive a blade 6 and the inner plate 3 is adapted to project beyond the cutting edge of the blade 6 and is bent to form a guard 7 adapted to prevent a person from shaving or cutting too close with the device. The outer plate a terminates short of the cutting edge of the blade 6 so as to permit the cutting edge of the blade to come in con tact with the face during the use of the device.
The other end of the shank 1 is screw threaded and is adapted to be threaded into a handle 8 so that the device can be readily grasped and manipulated by a person. A sleeve 9 is slidably mounted upon the shank l and has formed thereon outwardly and forwardly extending arms 10 which arms are adapted to extend through openings 11 formed in the inner plate and to engage the blade 6 for forcing the same tightly against the outer plate l thereby firmly holding the blade within the holder 2. If desired the blade 6 may be provided with openings to receive the ends of the arms 10 thereby firmly anchoring the blade within the holder. By threadingthe handle 8 on to the screw threaded end of the shank 2, the collar 9 is forced in the direction of the holder which causes the arms to move through the openings of the holder and into engagement with the blade or if the blade is provided with holders to enter said openings. By backing the handle off of the shank the collar can be moved away from the holder thereby disengaging the arms from the blade permitting the blade to be moved endwise from the holder.
Nhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention asclaimed.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim is 1. In combination, inner and outer plates for receiving a blade, said inner plate having openings and a shank, a sleeve slidable on said shank, means carried by said sleeve and adapted to pass through the openingsfor binding the blade against the outer plate, and means adj ustably connected to the shank for forcing the sleeve in the direction of the plates.
In combination, inner and outer plates for receiving a blade and said inner plate having openings and a shank, a sleeve slidable on said shank, outwardly and forwardly extending arms formed on said sleeve and adapted to pass through the openings and against the blade for forcing the same against the outer plate, and means adjust- 8. In combination, inner and outer plates for receiving a blade and said inner plate having openings and a shank, a sleeve slidahle on said shank, outwardlyrand forwardly extending arms formed on said sleeve and adapted to pass through the openings for 10 engagement With the blade to force the latter against the outer plate and a handle adjustahly connected to the shank and adapted to move the sleeve in the direction. of the plates.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EDWARD P. NORTON.
