To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, JOSEPH M. WEnnMKo, a citizen of Russia, residing at Herrick, county of Jefferson, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has as its principal object the provision of means for supplying a sin le match through an aperture in a box casing, thereby supplying means for igniting a cigar or cigarette.

A further object is to combine means for igniting the exposed end of the match and finally for ejecting the match after it has been used.

These objects are attained b construction and combination of parts herein'after described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which-- Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a match box made in accordance with the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 designates a rectangular metallic casing containing in its central portion a pair of opposed obliquely disposed longitudinal partitions 11, having between them an opening 12, extending lengthwise of the casing, these elements forming a match reservoir.

A beaded bottom or base 14 has attached below the plates 11 a pair of springs 15 on one side, and a single wider spring 15 at the other side. These springs projecting in opposite angular directions as can best be seen in Figs. 6 and 7, the same being firmly held to the base plate 14 by rivets or like fastening means 17.

One edge of the plate 14 is upturned, as at 18, providing a spring catch the opposite the novel view showing the the spring supedge 19 being provided with a pin acting 'n the manner of a hinge so as to permit the plate 14 to be turned outwardly from the casing when it is desired to refill the interior.

Attached to the inner side of the cover plate 21 is a spring guide 22 extending transversely partially across the cover plate, while attached centrally of the casing is an inclined plate 28.

Also attached t the rear, by a pivotal pin 24, is a curved flat spring 25, and formed therewith is a forwardly extending plate 26 narrowed in advance of the pivotal point, and adapted to press the match stick 28 downward into grooves 30 of a slide 31 having upon its inner lower surface a pair of lugs 32 and 33 respectively the inner and outer, the outer lug 33 being adapted to make contact with the outer surface of the casing when the slide is in an innermost position, while the inner lug 32 acts as a sf zip preventing the entire removal of the s 1 e.

The bifurcated or forked ends 34 of the slide 31 have upon their upper surface raised lugs 35, adapted to control the match, while the interior surfaces of the forks 34 are provided with a plurality of corrugw tions 36 adapted to engage with the relatively soft side of the match so as to handle and control the same.

The raised lugs making contact with the plate are adapted to raise the spring element 32 as the slide is drawn outwardly.

Also formed with the lower front edge of the slide 31, are a pair of outstanding edges 38 attached as guides in connection with suitable cooperative elements formed internally of the casing.

Engaged in the slide 31 is a rod or bar 40, having an extending handle portion 41 by which the slide is maneuvered.

Passing transversely through the front of the casing is a bar 42, provided with an extending actuating knob 43, the inner end of the bar 42 having fixed upon it a disk 44 adapted. to contact with the spirally wound compression spring 45, guided in the bracket 46, set in axial alinement with the bar 42 and upon the opposite inner side of the casing from the knob 43.

Also secured to the bar 42, midway in its length, is an abrading element 48, having upon its upper face corrugations similar to a file adapted to make contact with the igniting end of the match, which is held centrally oi the casing; by reason of the slide, and directly below an aperture 49, formed through the (over 21 of the casing, thereby providing entrance for the cigar or cigarette end, so that the same ma come in close proximity with the burning end of the match in a manner which will be apparent.

lVlien the match has been consumed, partially or wholly, the handle ll is retracted, moving outward the slide as far as permitted by the stop 32, while the match travels up the incline 50 formed between the fork elements ill and terminating in the outer surface of the slide 31, this operation being best shown in Fig. 3.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a practical device for the purpose is herein set forth and that the same is adapted to handle a suitable quantity of nn tches which may be refilled as occasion requires, and as the flame is contained wholly within the casing the match is not subject to being blown out by the wind or otherwise, but provides an effective means for lighting a cigaia Also after the cigar has been lit and the match is wholly or partially consumed it is moved outwardly from the casing and another fresh match supplied.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow rectangular casing, and a base hingedly engaged therewith, of spring elements arranged transversely in said base, oblique plates secured rigidly on said base, said oblique elements approaching each other at their upper edges and providing a reservoir Eor matches, a slide movable longitudinally in said casing, means for controlling the ultimate movements of said slide, forked forward ends on said slide adapted to receive a match from the mentioned reservoir, means for guiding said slide, gripping elements formed with the forked ends of said slide adapted to engage with a match whereby it may be projected or retracted, said casing having a circular opening near its front end into which said match end may be projected, a rod movable transversely throng 1 said casing, an abrader carried by said rod adapted to contact with the end of a match adjacent to the mentioned opening, means ior normally holding said abrader in a retracted position, and means for expelling a match coincident with the withdrawal of said slide.
