CHENEY KILBURN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PEN NSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND JOEL H. GATES, OF SAME PLACE:
IMPROVEMENT IN BOWS FOR CHAlR-BACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,896, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHENEY KILBURN, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Bows for Ghair-Backs, 8w., of which the following is a specification: a
The object of my invention is to enable bent wooden frames or hows for cradles, backs of chairs, &c., to be produced at a cheaper rate tha-n those heretofore used; and this objectI attain by constructing such frames or bows of two or more short pieces, A A & c., united, after having been bent to the required shape, by coupling-blocks B, as shown in the sectional View, Figure 1,of the accompanying drawing.

Clear, straight-gramed stufl', entirely free from knots, and from six to eight feet in length, for cradle-frames, must be used, the cost of such long strips being nearly double that or short strips of the same material; hence, by'forming the bows of short strips, united by couplingblocks, I am enabled to very considerably reduce the cost of the furniture.
The sectional bows are quite as strong as those made in one piece, and the couplingblocks can be turned or carved so as to impart an ornamental finish to the furniture.
Sectional bows may, if desired, -be made in accordance with my invention with. two or more joints.
I claim as my invention- A bow for chair-backs, 8w., composed or two or more bent strips of Wood united by coupling blocks, substantially as described.
