ASH-TRAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 24, 1919. Serial No. 306,315.
. specification.
' brands of ready made cigarettes after being ignited will burn until entirely consumed, the present invention being designed to economize in the use of cigarettes by preventing the cigarette from being entirely consumed while lying idle.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which by providing means for extinguishing cigarettes will not only economize in the use of the cigarette but will also prevent damage which so often results from leaving a burning cigarette upon the edge of a table or the like.
More specifically, the invention resides 1n the provision of an ash tray including a main portion constituting the receptacle, and an auxiliary portion in the nature of a flan e arranged in somewhat spaced relation to t e main portion whereby to provlde a space into which the lighted end of a cigarette may be thrust for extinguishing the fire.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, neat in appearance, efiicient in service, durable in use, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists 1n the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of an ash tray con- I structed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view therethrough, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken at right an les to Fig. 2. I
eferring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 desi 'nates'the main portion of the. device whic is formed prefer ably, though not necessarily of sheet metal and which is formed to provide a base bear- I ing 11 which may be merely a flange formed at the outer periphery of the main receptacle, this main receptacle, whether formed solid or of sheet metal, is provided adjacent lts outer periphery with a circumferential groove or recess 12 which is adapted to serve as a receptacle for ashes, match stems, and the like.
Disposed upon the center of the upper portlon of the main receptacle 10 is a washer 13 upon which is disposed the centrally depressed portion 14 of a circular or disk-like member 15 which is dish-shaped 1n cross section and which has its outer edge preferably beaded or rolled, as shown at 16. The shape of the member 15 is such that it extends upwardly with respect to the central portion of the main member 10, as clearly shown, whereby to form a gradually inward lzy constricted circumferential openin isposed upon the center of the depressed portion liof the disk member 15 is a stand ard 18 which is secured in place by means of a screw 19 which passes upwardly through ner. Fresh or unlighted cigarettes may, if desired, be disposed within or upon the Patented At 3, 1920.
dished disk member 15 around the standard 18. As previously stated, the circumferential groove 12 in the main member is adapted to receive ashes, match stems, and the like. When the user of acigarett'e desires to extinguish the same in order to economize in the consumption of the'cigarette, or for any other reason, it is merely necessary that he insert the burning "end into the constricted opening 17 between the top of the main member and the disk member 15. This act will sufiice to smother or choke the cigarette by mashing the lighted end and it Wlll be apparent that all the burning tobacco may, if desired, be removed from the remainder of the cigarette by proper manipulation of the cigarette within constricted opening,
From the foregolng description and astudy of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided. a neat appearlng and extremely simple and inexpensive ash receiver which is so constructed that a burn- A preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
" claim 1. An ashtray comprising a main member provided wlth a circumferential groove in aesae're its upper face serving as a receptacle for ashes and the like, a cupped member secured centrally upon said main member and having its sides extending upwardly in diverging relation to the top of said main member whereby to provide an inwardly constricted circumferential opening.
2. An ash tray comprising a main member provided in its top surface with a circumferential groove serving as a receptacle for ashes and the like,.a cupped member disposed centrally upon said main member and having its sides extending upwardly in diverging relation to the top of said main member whereby to provide an inwardly constricted circumferential opening spaced inwardly from the circumferential groove in said main member, a standard extending upwardly from the center of said cupped member and adapted. to support a match box holder, and a screw passing upwardly through the center of said main member, said cupped member, and into said standard.
In testimon whereofI affixm si nature.
