UNITED STATES GENNADY G. sHILornoF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MECHANICAL BURGLAR-ALARM.
Application led .Tune 14, 1919.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GENNADY G. SHILOFF, a citizen of Russia, residing at 2444 Washington Ave., New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its Object the provision of means engageable with one of the sashes of an ordinary window, whereby should an attempt be made to open either of the sashes they will become locked and audible signal given.
This and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view indicating a pair of sashes and an alarm device made in accordance with the invention as applied thereto.
F ig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the signal apparatus, and
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view indicating the attachment of the same to a conventional type of window.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numerals 10 and 11 indicate respectively the upper and lower sashes of an ordinary window, and set flush in the lower element of the sash 10 is a plate 12, secured by screws 13, and containing one or more openings 14 registering with similar openings 15 extending inward into the sash.
Set in the upper element of the sash 11 is a cylindrical casing 16, having a closed inner end 17, and a screw-threaded opposite end 18, engageable with a cap 19, formed with a bar 20, through the extending ends of which pass the Shanks of bolts 21, their heads 22 extending outward from the side of the sash element adjacent to the mating sash, the Shanks also passing through space washers 23 and the feet 24 of a bracket 25, all of which are clamped by the nuts 26.
Carried by the bracket 25 is the inner, stationary part 27 of an ordinary signal bell, over which is extended a cap 28, the same answering the purpose of a bell and being secured by a central hub or boss 29.
Within the lower element 27 of the signal Specification of Letters Patent.

bell, is a helically coiled spring 21, fixed to the spindle 30, the same being adapted to actuate a hammer 32 through a train of gears, the spring being wound by rotating the bell element in the usual manner.
A star wheel 33, actuated by the gear train, is held in position by a detent 34, engaged with the sliding arm 35, which extends out through the bottom of the casing 27. The arm 35 is formed with a bar 36, 011e 'end of which terminates in an actuating knob 37, while the opposite, lower end of the bar has aiixed to it a spindle 38, extended in an opposite direction to the arm 35,
passes through a central opening formed in the cap 19 into the cylindrical casing 16.
A -collar 39 is secured to the spindle and pressed toward the sash 10 by the coils of a compression spring 40, adapted to force the outer extremity of the spindle 38 through a central opening formed in the head 17 of the casing and cause it to enter one of the openings 14 and thence into the material of the sash when the holes are brought into registration with the spindle thus forcing the spindle into engagement with the opening in the other sash, locking the same against further movement.
At the same time this movement retracts the arm 25 from the hammer bar 41, releases the detent from the star wheel and permits the bell spring to operate, causing the hammer to vibrate against the bell 28, announcing the fact that the window sashes are being tampered with, and it will be evident so long as the sashes remain in a closed position, as indicated in Fig. 1, that the bell remains silent, it becoming operative only when the spindle 38 is moved outwardly or away from the bell and into locking engagement with the opposite sash.
Having thus described my invention whatl claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a burglar alarm, a cylindrical casing closed at one end, a removable cap closing the opposite end of said casing, a bar formed with said cap and having its ends projecting beyond the sides of said cap, a bell supported by said bar, a plunger slidable in said casing and extending through said cap, the closed end of the said casing having an opening through which the inner end of the said plunger is adapted to extend, a spring in said casing tending to force the inner end of Vthe said plunger through the said opening,
an arm carried by said plunger and exten ing into said bell, mechanism in said bell for ringing the latter and including a star Wheel and a hammer bar, the said arm locking the said star Wheel and hammer bar against operation When the plunger is retracted and releasing the said star Wheel and hammer bar for operation when the plunger is moved by said Vspring. l Y
In testimony whereof 1 have allxed my Y signature. Y
