To all whom it may conccrn:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the County of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
This invention relates to an alarm door knob.
I am aware of the fact that numerous attempts have been made to construct alarms as attachments to door knobs or as part of the door knobs themselves but so far as I am aware no device has been produced which includes, as part of the inner knob, a bell, a knocker therefor and means for actuating the knocker when the outer knob of the door is turned in either direction. This is an essential feature which when included in a knob brings success out of failure and produces a device which is highly practical and commercially valuable, inasmuch as it insures the sounding of the alarm irrespective of the direction in which the outer knob is rotated and it must be here remembered that the knob of the ordinary door may be turned in either direction to release the latch so that the door may be opened.
It is therefore an object of my invention to provide an alarm door knob which includes a bell, a knocker and means for actuating the knocker to sound the bell irrespective of the direction in which the outer door knob is turned.
It is a further object of my invention to so construct the device that it may be readily applied to the inner end of the spindle of the outer knob by merely removing the inner knob and the escutcheon and substitutingmy device therefor.
It is a further object of my invention to so construct the device that its operation will be entirely mechanical and yet the alarm will be sounded with suflicient clearness to perform its proper function.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as my description progresses, mv invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In carrying out the above objects and in a bell within the inner knob, a knocker for the bell and a train of gears mounted wthn the inner knob to actuate the knocker when the outer knob is turned in either direction.
In the drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal sectonal View of my device showing the parts in the positions they will occupy when the alarm is set; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the manner in which the throw of the knob spindle is permitted in either direction; Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and showing the arrangement of the gears and the knocker, and Fig. 4: is a plan view partly broken away.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views, I have illustrated a portion of a door l which is provided with the usual knob spindle 2, which spindle extends through an outer escutcheon 3 that has a knob 4 of the ordinary form secured to the outer end thereof. Mounted on the inner `face of the door is an escutcheon 5 which includes a bridge 6. A collar 7 surrounds the spindle 2 and is movable therewith since the spindle is rectangular in cross section and fits snugly within the collar. An inner knob is secured to this collar 7 by screws 8. This knob includes a base portion 9 to which a cover 10 is attaehed by means of screw threads 11. A-
bell 12 is secured to and lies within this cover 10 as illustrated clearly in Fig, 1 of the drawing. It will thus be seen that when the outer knob 4 is turned, the collar 7 and the inner knob will be turned likewise. In order that the bell 12 may be sounded during this -turning of the inner knob I have provided the following mechanism: A gear spindle 13 extends through and is rotatably mounted in the base 9 of the inner knob. The end of the spindle which is located within the inner knob is supported by a bracket 14: which is secured to the base by screws 15. The opposite end of the spindle 13 extends into the knob spindle 2 and has a transversely extending threaded aperture therein which registers with an aperture in the knob spindle 2. A pin 16 extends into this threaded aperture and is thus attached to the spindle 13. This spindle extends outwardly through a segmentul opening 17 in the collar 7, the purpose of the opening later becoming apparent. A looking or clutch member 18 is pivoted, at 19, to the escutcheon 5 and this loching member 18 is provided with a socket in the free end ther-cof which is adapted to receive the free end of the pin 16 when it is swung over the pin. It will thus be seen that when this latter is the case, the spindle 13 will be locked to the escutcheon 5 and consequently it will remain stationery when the inner Imob is rotated, this action being permitted because of the presence ot' the segmental opening 17 in the collr 7 which permits the colier to rotate with the lrnob spindle 2 and also permits the knob spindle to rotate in either direction to the usual eXtent. Secured to the spindle 13 is a gear 20 which is located within the inner knob and which meshes with a relatively smaller gear or pinion 21 which is secured to a shaft 22, the latter being rotatably mounted in the bracket lt and the base 9 of the inner knob. A toothed wheel 23 is Secured to the shatt 22 and pivotally mounted, at 2% on the bracket 14, is a plate 25 which carrics the l-:nocker 26. It will be noted that this plate 25 is provided with a toe portion on each end thereof, which are adapted to contact alternately with the teeth on the wheel 23 so that the plate will be oscillated rrespective of the direction, in which the wheel 23 is turning and the knocker will be actueted at such times.,
It will thus be seen that when the outer knob 4 is turned the inner knob together with the gear 21, the toothed wheel 23, the knocker plate 25 and the knocker 26 will be turned with it. t will be further seen that the spindle 13 and the gear 20 will remain stationary at this time when the locker or clutch 18 engages the end of the pin 16. As the gear 21 rotates about the gear 20 it will itself be rotated so that during the mover ment of the knob the knocker will be actuated to sound the bell irrespective of the direction in which the knob is turned.
lVhile I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it has merely been for the sake or" convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is' obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of Construction without departing from the spirit ot' the invention or eXceeding the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 2-- c 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with e l-:nob spindle, of an escutcheon, a collar rigidly mounted on the spindle and having a segmental slot therein, a knob Secured to the collar a` bell within the knob, a kuocker tor said bell, means for Operating the knocker' including a toothed wheel, a plete connected to the knocker and adapted to be actuated by the toothed wheel, a gear rigid with the toothed wheel, a spindle niounted in 'the knob, a gear rigid therewith and meshing with the first mentioned gear, the end oi said spindle extendins nto the knob spindle, a pin Secured to the said end and eXtending through the segmental slot in the collar and means for locking the pin t the escutcheon.
2. ln a device ot the class described, the combination with a knob spindle, of a gear spindle extending in elinement with the aXis thereof and mounted rotatably therein, a knob mounted 'on said knob spindle, a bell within. the knob, the said gear spindle having a pin rigidly connected therewith and extending upwardly through a slot in the knob spindle, the said slot extending to each side of the pin when the latter is in its normal or vertical position and means for maintaining the gear spindle stationary.
