UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKV E. ABBOTT, OF PI'ITSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION DOOR-BELL AND BURGLAR-ALARIVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '709.252, dated September 16, 1902.
Application filed March 18, 1902. Serial No. 98.739. (No modeln To all whom, t may concer-.11,.-
Be it known thatI, FRANK E. ABBOTT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Door-Bell and Burglar-Alarm', of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door-bells and burglar-alarms, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a device may be conveniently used during the day as a doorbell and adjusted to such a position at night that a slight movement of the door-knob will immediately notify the occupants of the dwelling that the outer door-knob has been tampered with.
The present invention further contemplates to provide a device of this character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the inventionlin detail reference is had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure lis a front view of a section of door, showing the inner side thereof, with my improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of my improved device. Fig. 3 is an under plan View, partly in section, of the adjustable arm whereby the doorbell is converted into a burglar-alarm. f
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the door of the ordinary construction, having secured therein an ordinary lock 2, the latch-bolt 3 being perated by a hollow shaft 4, carrying hollow knobs 5 and 6. The said hollow knob 5 represents the outer knob and 6 the inner knob, which consists of a T gong, suitably securedtogether. In the hollow door-knob 5 is formed a recess 6' by inwardly-extending walls 7, which is adapted to receive the push-button S, secured to the rod 9, passing through the knob 5, extending through the hollow shaft 4, said rod being encircled by a spiral spring 10, arranged in the hollow knob 5. In the hollow knob (l is arranged an ordinary clock mechanism 11, carrying a tapper 12. The said hollow knob 6 is formed of metal and comprises the gong. The clock mechanism 11 is provided with a wheelk 14:, having a series of apertures 15 formed therein, which extend around the said wheel. To the end of the rod 9 is pivotally secured at 16 the lever 17, which is fulerumed at 18, the ends of said lever carrying a lug 19, which is adapted to engage in one of the apertures 15 when the device' is in a locked position. To this lever 17 is also secured an arm 20, which extends through the hollow knob 6 and rides in the V-shaped groove 22, formed in the under face of the adjustable arm 23, said adjustable arm having formed therein a slot 25, operating against the screws 26, and set-screw 27, provided to properly adjust said arm.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: During the day the arm 23 is raised to the position whereby the arm 2O will be disengaged therefrom and the knobs may be easily turned in one direction or the other without ringing the gong, and when in this position the device is merely used as a doorbell, which by depressing the button S will operate the rod 9, which in turn communicates movement to the lever 17 and serves to disengage the lug 19, carried thereby, from its .seat in one of the apertures 15, thereby releasing the spring mechanism, which will operate the gong. When the button is released, the spiral spring will return the parts to their normal position, and the lug 19' being pressed against the face of the wheel 14 Will automatically engage in one of the apertures and again lock the device. When at night the adjustable arm 23 is lowered to the position that the arm will engage the V-shaped groove 22, then by turning the knob the arm will ride upwardly in the V-shaped groove 22, which will tend to operate the lever 17, carrying the lug 19, in a similar manner as when IOO operated by means of the push-button and the alarm will be sounded thereby, as heretofore set forth.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It Will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction with-A out departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a door-bell and burglar-alarm, the combination withhollowknobs, ahollow shaft connecting said knobs, a rod extending through said shaft and one of said knobs, a push-button secured to the end of said rod, a
clock mechanism secured in one of said knobs, a wheel carrying openings formed therein attached to said clock mechanism, a lever secured to the end of said rod, and means carried by said lever to engage one of said openings, substantially as described.
2. In a door-bell and burglar-alarm, the combination of hollow door-knobs, a hollow shaft connecting said knobs, a clock mechanism secured in one of said knobs, and means to actuate said clock mechanism when one of said knobs is turned, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signatur in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK E. ABBOTT.
