LE GGIN G.
Specification of Letters Patent. Y Patented July 27, 1920.
Application filed March 13,'1918. SerialA No. 222,236.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, EMIL PETERS and ANDREW LAMBERT, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ofv Cook and State of Illinois, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improve- Vments 1n Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in leggings and one object is to provide a legging formed with an integral nose which is formed of a flexible material adapted to conform to the shape of the shoe ofthe wearer and which nose is provided with shape-retaining means so that its efficiency as a protection against inclement weather is not impaired by wear or rough usage. A further object is to provide a legging having a water proof surface or skin, and a legging which is neat and dressy in appearance and that, at the same time, is cheap tol manufacture. l
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which- Figure l is a view in side elevation of one embodiment of our invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a cross section, enlarged, on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, enlarged, on line 1 -4 of Fig. 2.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
. The body lportion l of the legging is shaped to approximately fit the calf and ankle of the wearer and it is formed of an inner fabric of leather 2, or like material, and an outer fabric of water proof material 3 such as rubber. One edge of the legging is covered by the binding strip 5 and the other with a similar strip 6, the edges overlapping each other. The inner and outer layers ofmaterial 2, 3 are suitably secured together and are also connected by the eye-- lets T through which the lacing cord 8 passes to releasably secure the Voverlapped edges together 1n a well known manner.
A curved pointed nose is formed at they lower extremity of the legging and embedded in the same is the stiif anchor-shaped spring'lO, the wings of the anchor extending along the tapering edges of the nose 9 and the anchor stem extending through the bridge ll of the nose. The spring 10 will stiften the nose 9 and cause the same to retain its shape during the life of the legging and will cause the noseV to snugly conform to the shape ofthe shoe of the wearer. A strap l2 carried by the legging is adapted to pass beneath -the instep of the wearer to hold the legging in properV position. rlhe legging being laced shut along the side presents a neat and dressy front and a front devoid of openings or crevices through which snow or wind may penetrate to the discomiiture of the wearer.
lVhat is claimed is In a legging, a body portion comprising an inner fabric and an outer fabric, the latter being a substantially water proof material, the edges of said body portion being overlapped and adapted for sliding adjustment upon each other or for close binding engagement with each other, flexible means criss-crossing said overlapped edges upon both sides of the same for effecting the desired adjustment thereof, binding strips for the overlapped edges of said body portion, a flexible nose terminating said body portion, flexible anchor-shaped stiffening means embedded in said nose, the wings of said an- Y chor-shaped means extending along the sides Vof said nose and the stem of said means extending along the bridge of said nose, and a strap secured to and depending from said body portion. f n
In testimony thatwe claim the foregoing as our own we hereto aliix our signatures in Vthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
