Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
JOHN B. HIGGINS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHWLSTRAFS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J onN B. HrGGINs, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Shawl-Straps, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Intention.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements on the handle for shawl or cloak straps, consisting in a rigid handle provided with Vloop-holes or incisions for the straps to pass through each end ofthe handle. The rigid metallic handle is to be covered in part or whole with leather or any other suitable material. The object of my invention is tov prevent the straps from crowding together, as is the case where a soft or elastic handle is used.
On the drawing, Figure l shows, on the right-hand side, a side eleva-tion, and on the left-hand side a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a ground plan; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section over the line A B, taken on Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the drawing.
a on the drawing is the rigid metallic handle, provided in each end with an incision or hole, `b b, for the straps to pass through. The
upper side of the rigid metallic handle a is A provided with anges c c on each side, as shown in Fig. 3, between which is laid the welted strap d that embraces the covering e, in a manner as fully shown.- The straps el o are attached to the rigid metallic handle a by means of rivets j'ff in each end of the handle, as shown on the drawing.
The whole of the rigid metallic handle a may also, it' desired, be covered all over with leather or suitable covering.
The advantages over other shawl-strap handles now in use is, that the straps that pass through the holes b b are held at a proper distance from each other, and do not crowd together in a manner as takes place when a soft or flexible handle is used.
The rigid handle a is curved in a manner, as shown, so as to give sufficient room for the carriers hand between the handle and the shawl or cloak, 85e., when the shawl-strap is required for use.
Having thus fully described the nature and construction of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- In combination with a curved metallic handle, a, provided with side flanges c c, the welted strap cl and covering e, attached to the handle in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN B. HIGGINS.
