ALFRED W. MGCREARY, 0F MOUNT PLEASANT, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION SCREEN-BED.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. MoCnEARY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at MountPleasant, in the county of Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Screen-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to beds and more particularlyto a bed which is adapted to be completely inclosed by a screen covering When in use, and which may be used for any one of several purposes.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a bed of simple construction and operation which may be produced at small cost and is provided with screen cover members capable of being readily moved to completely cover the upper portion of the bed. A further object is to provide a bed which may be utilized either as a swing, a bed, or a crib.. Another object is to provide means whereby the bed may be partly disassembled for-shipping j purposes so as to occupy but little space. 7 Further objects Will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawingst- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bed constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view showing the bed mounted to be used as a crib, one of the cover members being shown in open position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail of the means for securing the guide rings.
Fig. 4 is an end view, partly in section, of one of the end frames.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the bed as used for a swing couch or seat.
The body portion of the bed is formed by two substantial semi-circular end members 1 connected by side brace bars 2'and a bottom brace bar 3, these frames being further connected by spacing and brace rods 1. Member 1 cooperates with a similar member 5 to form an annular end frame 6. The end portions of member 5 fit snugly into recesses provided in the side bars 2 (Fig. 1), and this member is held tightly in cooperative relation to member 1 by a securing bolt 6 passing through members 5 and 1 and the lower bar 3, a nut 7 being threaded upon the lower end of this bolt and the head of the bolt being counter-sunk in member 5 as illustrated. Each of the end frames 6 carries a concentric guide ring 8 which is detachably secured by U-hooks 9 to bars 3.

lower or bottom bar 3, together with the members 1 constitute a supporting frame for covering 10 of screen wire, and each of the members 1 is also provided with a disk 11 of screen wire which fits snugly within upper member 5 so as to effectually close the same. Two closure members 12 are slidably mounted upon the guide rings 8 for move ment about the same in opposite directions. Each of these members is of arcuate cross section and is adapted to extend slightly more than one-fourth of the distance about the annular end frames or members 6. Closure member 12 is formed of an upper bar 13 and a lower bar 14 which are connected adjacent their ends by arcuate brace rods 15, each of these bars being provided with a U-member 16 which fits about ring 8 so as to secure and guide the closure member. \Vhen the members 12 are in raised or closed position the bed is completely inclosed by screen wire so as to effectuallyprevent the entry of flies, mosquitoes, and other insects. As will be noted more clearly from Figs. 1 and 5, side 3 project an appreciable distance beyond the end frames 6, and the bars 2 are connected by a bolt 17 inserted through the same. By moving the members 12 into open position and supporting the frame by mean of ropes or cables 18 passing about the end portions of bars 2, the bed may be made to serve as a swing or seat, it being understood that a suitable cushion is placed within the lower portion of the bed. As will be understood, if desired the bed may be suspended at an angle by attaching the cables to one of the bars 2 and to the end portions of bar 3, if desired.
By providing suitable supporting frames 19 at each end of the bed, the bed may be supported in a horizontal position, as indicated in Fig. 2. In the form of the supporting frame illustrated, I provide two spaced uprights 20 connected by an upper brace bar 21 and two lower bars 22 spaced to snugly receive between them the end por- .orib.

uprights thus converting the bed intoa When it is "desired to ship by'removing bolts 6, and the guide rings 8 may be detached by removing U-hooks 9. This reduces the height of the be'd'one-hal'f so that it may be readily-packed .forshippingin such a manner as to occupy comparatively small .space, the parts detached being placed Within the lower portion of the I bed body.
. As will be understood, it may be found desirable in practice to resort to slight modifications in details of construction and arrangement of the Various parts of the invention, and I intend to include all such variations, as fall within the appended claims, in this application in which a pre ferred =formo'nly of :myinvention is dis closed. I Y
lVh'at Icla'im is:
1 1. :In a bed, a semi-cylindrical body provided with semi-circular end members, upper semi-circular end members detachabl'v the bed, the upper members 5 may be readily detached members mounted on said gulde rings and ing semi-circular end members and side bars connectmg the same, semi-circular members having their ends fitting into sockets in the side bars in substantial alinement with the ends of said end members, said semi-circular members and the end members cooperating to form circular end frames, means for detachably securing the semi-circular members in operative relation to the endmembers, guide rings detachablyrsecured to the body inconcentric relation to the circular end frames, and cover members movable on said rings about the body and the end frames. i v
3. In a bed, a body including lateral brace 7 bars andprovided at each end with an end member, upper end members seated in said barsand cooperating with the end members of the body to form end frames, said body 1 also including a bottom brace bar and 'al1 of said bars projecting beyond the end frames, guide rings mounted in spaced relation to the end frames, said lateral bars having 7 grooves receiving the rings so as to hold the same in predetermined relation to the end frames, means for detachably connecting the members 01 the end frames, means for detachably securing the guide rings to the projecting 'endssof the bottom bar, and cover movable thereon, about the body;
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 65
