SLEEPING-PORCH.
Application filed October 8,
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that l, lnnNn Konan-arr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleeping-Porches, of which the following* is a specicatioii.
rhis invention relates to sleeping porches, and has for an object to provide a sleeping` porch of improved type capable oi'i beine1 attached to and suspended without a window.
,el further object of the invention is to provide improved screening means for the porch, whereby7 the bed supported upon such sleeping' porch is protected in the usual manner.
Writh these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain new and novel teatures, combinations and arrangements oii parts, as will. be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
ln the drawings,
Figure l a view of the improved sleeping porch taken upon a vertical plane int-ec mediate its ends.
Fig. 2 is a perspective, fragmentary view oi several of the parts disassociated.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary, detail, sectional view of one of the corners.
Fig. el is a fragmentary View of the means for attaching` the device to the window sill. 5 is a detail sectional view, showing` the manner of adjustment to compensate tor walls of different thicknesses.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the severalv views.
The terms the subject-matter of this application, ooi'iiprises a pair of brackets composed oi a beam l0, and a brace member formed ot a plate member ll and a brace 12. The bracket is adapted to be attached to the window sill by having,I the bar lO'provided with a hook, preferably twistedas indicated more particularly at 13, with a. set-screw 'i4 engaging; in a channel bar l5. which extends across the inside of the window sill and is made of sufficient length to accommodate the device to windows of various widths. Also the device is adapted for adjustment to walls oit varying thicknesses, by having the beam 10 provided with a plurality orn perfor-ations 16, as shown more particularlyY in Fig. 5., and with bolts 17 extending through the improved sleeping' porch, which Specification of Letters Patent. Eatenlted N0V 16, 1920.
1919. Serial N0. 329,280.
registering perforations of the beam and the underlying brace member A1l.
As the adjustment, just mentioned, ,would not compensate to a nicety for all thickV nesses et wall, a second set-screw 1.8 is pro,
pleted bracket, a bed-bottoin .i's positioneey comprising pipes 20 extending longitudi-y nally ot the bed structure, that is to say, transversely relative'to the beams 10. Y The pipes 20 are ot the usual` and ordinary lengths providing` bed-bottoms, and arepro-v vided with upt'urned extremities 2l, as shown more particularly at Figs. 2 and 3. A frame or bar 22, preferably ot anule-bar construction, is rigidly secured to the upturned 'extremities 2l, andto such anpglebar structure, the bed-bottom fabric ot'any construction is secured, being indicated diagrammatically at 23, it beine,` understood that this fabric may be of any usual and ordinary'type. The angle rails 22 are also preferably provided with a hinge 24, whereby the structure ma be 'folded with one ci the pipes 2O superposed substantially upon or 'above' the other pipe, makina the folded bed structure one-halt the width of the extended structure. bottom structure upon the brackets, hooks 25 are provided, secured upon the pipes 2O by means of sleeves 26, with set-screws 27 to maintain the proper position ot the parts.
By simply sliding` the bed-bottom structure To maintain this bede4 frame thus constructed, is filled with any fabric material preferably a coarse and. resisting fabric for safety, and the finer insect-resisting fabric 36, whereby the structure protects the user not only against accident, but also against insects. Preferably the uprights 32, which are adjacent the house, are provided with screw-s 37, although such screws 37 are unnecessary, if Va covering is used over the guard, which is 'desirable to complete Aprotection against insects. such cover, whenused, comprises a frame composed. of front and rear bars 38, and end bars 39, the end bars being preferably provided with hinges e0, whereby the cover structure maybe folded to be withdrawn through `the window.V Also, of course, the frame structure is covered with such fabric structure as maybe found desirable.
For the purpose ofV maintaining the ,gi-iardV structure upon the bed-bottom, brackets l1 are carried by such guard structure, and tor the purpose of retaining the cover member f upon the guard structure, brackets 42 are provided, and either or both of such brackets may be provided with set-screws or thumbscrews 43, whereby the several parts are held in separable engagement. j
ln operation, it will be apparent that the bracket members carrying the bars 15 and 1.9 will first be eXserted through the window,
and the bracket members adjusted longitudinally `of the bars 15 and 19 to the Width of the window. The beams 10 are now leveled by the proper adjustment of the screws 14V and 18, whereby the beams 10 `are horizontal and in parallelism. The bed-bottom structure folded is now exserted through the window upon the brackets, and extendedto its unfolded position. The guard structure, by reason of its height and being provided with three sides, requires no hinging,` and may be eXserted through the window 'and j properly positioned upon'the bed-bottom structure, as likewise the Vcover member will also be put into place. The sleeping porch and bed arrangement are now complete and the bedding 'may be placed thereon in the usual well-known manner.
I claim:
1. A sleeping porch comprising spaced brackets composed of a plate and brace rigidly connected and a horizontal beam adjustably mounted thereon, means to adjust 2. A sleeping porch comprising spaced -brackets to removably secure the bed structure to the brackets, and a guard structure provided with means for engagement upon the bed structure.
3. A sleeping porch comprising brackets embodying a beam and a brace member, and
Vadapted to be secured to a Window sill,
means to adjust the brace member relative to the beam, means on either side ofthe window sill to adjust the completed bracket to position the tops of such brackets in a horizontal plane, a bed structure adapted to be carried upon the brackets, a guard structure surrounding the bed structure, and a cover structure 'carried upon the guard structure. Y Y
4. A sleeping porch comprising brackets each comprising a beam and a brace mem* ber, means to permit adjustment of the brace member relative to the beam member, means to secure the beam and brace member in such adjusted relation, a hook carried by each of the beam members adapted to hook overa window sill, and adjusting screws carried by the completed bracket adapted to slidably engage a channel bar within and without the window sill to space the branle ets and move the tops of the brackets into the same horizontal plane.
5. A sleeping porch adapted te be secured to a window sill comprising a spaced bracket made up oi' a horizontal beam memA ber and a supporting brace, said beam having an inwardly and downwardly extending hooked portion formed on its inner end, horizontal channel bars transverse to the beam member and on both sides of the window sill, complementary perforations in the` j adjusting means for the beam and brace member.V Y j In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Memphis, Tennessee,
this 6th day of October, A. D. nineteen hun dred and nineteen.
