Description

.5. F. HARLEY.`
Scaffolds.
Patented Jan. 14, 1873.
STATES- JQHN F. DARLEY, OF NEBRASKA CITY, NEBRASKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCAFFOLDS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,737, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. DARLEY, of Nebraska City, in the county of Otoe and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved J ack-.Trestle 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure lisa perspective view of the jack arranged for use outside of a window; Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the jack arranged for use as a platform-support; and Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the stepped Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements on the builders jack for which Letters Patent were granted to me bearing date on the 28th day of May, 1872. The improvements relate to a novel mode of attaching legs to the platformbeam, and also to a sill-support for the platform-beam, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following description of my invention will enable others skilled in the art to understand it.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a platform-beam, which is slotted longitudinally, as shown at a, and on one end of which a platform, B, is rigidly secured. C represents a cross-brace, of sufficient length to extend across the widest window-frame, which brace is passed horizontally through the slot ct and fastened to the beam A by means of a vertical pin, b. The holes b receive the pin b', when the brace C is adjusted opposite them. D D are stepped blocks, which are intended for insertion between the brace C and a window-frame, and which are covered on one side with India rubber d, thus forming cushions which prevent the brace from abrading a window-frame. Between the platform B and the slot c are devices for fastening the legs G of Fig. l, or legsvS of Fig. 2, to the beam A. These devices consist of lugs g g and eyes f, applied on each side of the beam A, so as to receive between them the upper ends of said legs. By means of pins c the legs are secured to the eyes f. The legs Gr G, Fig. l, are short, and have applied to them a horizontal piece, J, which is intended to rest upon a window-sill, and afford a broad base support for the platform and its beam. The legs S S, being pivoted to the eyes f by the pins e, can be adjusted laterally so as to increase or diminish the distance between their lower ends. The notched brace or the bar t is pivoted to one of the upper sections S, and connected to the other upper section by means of a pin, c'. This bar t will hold the legs at any desired distance apart. Each leg consists of two sections, S S', which are connected together by loops a n and pins Jm, so that by removing the pins the sections can be extended or contracted'in length. The pins on are square, and the holes for them are made by grooving the sides of .the sections which are together, so that one-half the pin is received into one groove and the other half into the opposite groove, thus preventing endwise play of the leg-sections.
When the yoke is arranged as shown by Fig. l, it is used in a window, the piece J resting on the window-sill, and the piece C extending across the window-frame.
When the jack is arranged as shown by Fig. 2, it is designed for use as a platformsupport for brick-layers, plasterers, and others, and when so arranged the beam A and platform B can be adjusted at different heights.
By leaving off the platform B of two beams A, and connecting these beams together by means of clamp-screws applied through the slots a, using the legs shown in Fig. 2, inclining from each other, a trestle will be formed on which planks may be laid and vsupported for plasterers use.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 4 l. The removable legs G and cross-bar J, in combination with the platform-beam A and platform B, substantially as described.`
2. The longitudinally and laterally extensiblesectional legs S S', pivoted to eyes f and brace t, in combination with the lugs g and platform-beam A, substantially as described.
3. The cushions and stepped blocks lD, for the purpose described.
JOHNF. DARLEY.
