To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gr. Smart es, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Horse, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to adjustable trestles or horses designed to be used by masons, carpenters, paperhangers, painters, plasterers and such like artisans to support a temporary staging or floor upon which to stand and worlnor for like support ng purposes; and particularly to that class of adjustable trestles in which the supporting legs thereof are independently ad ustable, so that the trestle may be adjusted lnto a level position notwithstanding that the surface upon which it stands may be irregular in contour.
The objects of my invention are to provide an improved adjustable trestle or horse which may, be easily and cheaply manufactured, which may be readily adjusted to \nriousheightsand one 111 wh ch the legs whereby the ad ustmentis provided for may be removed from the remaining portion of the device-t0 thereby provide a compact andeasily transportable structure.
A further object of my invention isto providean adjustable trestle in which a single head portion maybe used with legs of (l1fferent lengths to thereby extend the range of usefulness of the device; and to provide an adjustable trestle which will be strong and rigid when in use and one in which the clamping devices. for securing the adjustable legs and head portion together are of suchforrn and construction that the parts will be the more firmly clamped together the greater the load borne by the trestle.v
Vlliththe above and other 'objectspf 1nvention in view,,rny invention cons sts in the improved adjustable trestle illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and particularly claimed, and in such var ations and modifications thereof as will be-obviousto those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.

necting bars 11, so that both the clamping membersassociated with each ad ustable leg maybe swung about their pivotal connections 10 by moving said connecting bars longitudinally of -'thelegs. To this end the lower ends of the connecting bars are preferably extended, and provided with hooks 12,- with which hooksfiexible members 13 are connected. The'bars may be pulled downward to release the adjustable legs either by taking hold-of the free ends of the bars or by pulling upon the flexible members 13 1f the headportion' of the trestle is adjusted to such a height that the lower ends of the bars cannot be'readily reached. 'The' reference numerals 17 designate springs (one associated with each of the clamping mechanisms above described), one end of each of which is connected with the bar 11 of the clamping mechanism with which itlis associated and the other end of which is connected with a fixed projection, preferably with the pivot whereby the upper clamping member 9- is connectedwith the leg'5. The purpose of these springs is to draw the connecting bars 11 upwardly, and
thus move and hold the outer ends l5 of the clamping members in engagement with the outer face of the adjustable legs 8 and the purpose of the loose connections provided by the slots 16 .is to permit the two clamping members for each adjustable leg to adjust themselves toslight variations in width of j the: legs (measured outward from the fixed.
legs 5 upon whichthey'rest') at the points connecting bar extending between and operatively connected with them, and so that both the clamping members associated with each adjustable leg will grip the same with substantially equal force and have the same or substantially the same holding action in clamping the'adjustable and the fixed legs together when the trestle is in use,
lPhe upper ones of the swinging clamping members 9 are made somewhat wider than the adjustable legs which extends through them in order to permit the upper ends of oppositely located adjustable legs to he moved sidewise relative to one another so that said upper ends may bemade to pass by one another and extend above the top bar 4, as illustrated; thus permitting a trestle equipped with a given set of adjustable legs to be adjusted between a lower position in which the fixed legs 5 rest upon the ground or other surface and an upper position in rests may be irregular in contour; and that i sets of adjustable legs of different lengths may be used with a given head portion in or der to increase the range of adjustability ol the trestle as a whole. Finally, when the trestle is loaded the outer ends 15 of the inclined clamping members 9 will be drawn into firm engagement with the outer or free edges of the adjustable legs (due to the tendency of the load to move the head portion downward), from which it follows that the holding action of the clamps will be the greater the greater the load borne by the trestle. It will also be appreciated that the adjustable legs may be readily removed from the head portion of the trestle and the trestle as a whole thus rendered compact and easily transportable, and that the head portion alone may be'used as a trestle or horse of lesser height than the trestle considered as a whole, and considered asequipped with the adjustable legs. c
Having thus described and explained my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An adjustable trestle or horse comprising a top bar; a plurality of fixed legs carried by and rigidly connected with said top bar; a plurality of adjustable legs in contact with and extending one. along each of said fixed legs; and a plurality of clamping mechanisms for securing said adjustable legs one to each of said fixed legs each of said clamping mechanisms comprising two spaced pivotally supported clamping members the free ends of which are adapted to engage the outer or free edge of the adjustable leg with which they are associated; and a connecting bar operatively connected with each of said clamping members and whereby said members may be operated to release said adjustable leg.
2. An adjustable trestle or horse comprising a top bar; a plurality of fixed legs carried by and rigidly connected with said top bar; a plurality of adjustable legs in contact with and extending one along each of said fixed legs; and a plurality of clamping mechanisms for securing said adjustable legs one to each of said fixed legs-each of said clamping mechanisms comprising two spaced pivotally supported U-shaped clamping members extending about an adjustable leg and the free ends of which are adapted to engage the outer or free edge thereof; a connecting bar pivotally connected with each of said clamping members; and a spring operatively connected with said bar and adapted to force the free outer ends of said clamping members into engagement with the free outer edge of said adjustable leg.

An adjustable trestle or horse comprising a top bar; a plurality of fixed legs carried by and rigidly connected with said top bar; a plurality of adjustable legs in contact with and extending one along each of said fixed legs; and a plurality of clamping mechanisms for securing said \adljustablej, legs one to each of said fixed legs-each of said clamping mechanisms comprising two spaced pivotally supported clamping members the free ends of which are adapted to engage the outer or free edge of the adjustable leg with which they are associated; and a connecting bar operatively connected with each of said clamping members and whereby said members may be operated to release said adjustable leg; the connection between said connect-ing bar and one of said clamping members being loose so that the two clamping members in; question may have a limited movement independent of one another.

An adjustable trestle or horse comprising a top bar; a plurality of diverging fixed legs carried by and rigidly connected with said top bar; a plurality of adjustable legs in contact with and extending one along each of said fixed legs; and a plurality of clamping mechanisms for securing said adj ustable legs one to each of said fixed legseach of said clamping mechanisms comprising two spaced pivotally supported U-shaped clamping members extending about an ad justable leg and the free ends of which are adapted to engage the outer or free edge thereof; a connectin bar pivotally connected with each of said clamping members; and a spring operatively connected with said bar and adapted to force the free outer ends of said clamping members into engagement with the free outer edge of said adjustable leg; the upper one of said clamping members being wider than the adjustable leg with which it cooperates, so that the upper end of said leg may be moved sidewise and permitted to pass by the upper end of another adjustable leg.
