To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN V. HORR, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Cleveland, in the county of (Juyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display-Car tons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The present invention relates to cartons or containers which are intended to contain articles packed therein, and are so constructed as to be adaptable to display the contents of the carton by folding certain portions thereof in a manner to support the body in an inclined position.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a carton having a body portion and an easel portion by which the body is supported and held in inclined position, and having parts attached to the easel and to the body such that the easel is held in its upright position, and tipping or canting of the easel with respect to the body of the box is prevented.

A further object of the invention is to provide a blank cut from a single sheet of material which, when folded produces the entire carton cover and easel.

A further object of the invention is to provide a construction whereby a display card is mounted upon the carton and is frictionally held in upright position so as to display the advertising matter printed thereon.

Other objects of the invention will-appear more at large as the description proceeds.

Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the carton in folded up and closed condition; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the carton with the easel in supporting position; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the showing in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a side elevation with portions in section showing the carton in a position midway between its closed and open condition; Fig. 5 is a sectiorfal elevation of a portion of the carton; Fig. 6 1s a plan view of a blank cut from a sheet of material; Fig. 7 shows the blank in partially folded condition; Fig. 8 is aplan view of the display forms the subject matter of this invention are a body portion 1, an easel portion 2, and a cover portion which comprises the two members 3 and 4, and serve to connect the easel to the body. i

As will be noted, the easel 2 is formed as a separate and distinct element from the body, and is also a distinct element from the cover. However, the cover is attached to the easel, and is also attached to the body of the carton so that the easel and the body of the carton are inseparably united to each other so that the easel may not become displaced or lost, and furthermore, the cover members serve to hold the easel member in its final position with respect to the body 1 as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the easelsupports the body in an inclined position for the purpose of displaying the articles for sale which are contained within the carton. 4

The arrangement of the easel with respect to the body when in the position shown in Fig. 2 and with respect to the covers 3 and 4 is such that the cover member 4 forms the bottom and hypotenuse of a supporting triangle, as shown in Fig. 2, the member 4 extending along the bottom of the body por tion 1. These cover - members 3 and 4 are .the material within the body portion 1.

The cover members 3 and 4 are attached to the forward end of the box as shown in Fig.

4, and each of these members is provided with a fold or score as indicat'edat 4 and 3 which permit the cover members 3 and 4 to fold around the forward end of thebox.

The cover member 4 is provided with second fold or score 4 but this is merely for the purpose of enabling the cover member 4 to become folded when the box is in the position as shown in Fig. 1, for as will 100 connection at their ends with the easel 2, the cover member 3 being hin edly connected with the easel at the junction, of the end member 2 and the bottom member 2*, while the cover member 4: is hinged to the easel at the outer end of the. bottom member 2.

The easel member itself is formed with oppositely disposed side members 2 and an intermediate bottom member 2 these side members being folded into position at substantially right angles to the bottom, and the end portion 2 beingv formed by inter locking members. the easel member is a distinct member and the parts forming the same are folded and held in folded position independently of any connection which the easel has with the body of the carton or with the cover.

When the carton is in its closed condition,

the cover members 3 and 4 extend across the open or top portion of the body of the carton andform a true cover while the easel member 2 engages with the sides and an end of the carton, thus serving to hold the cover members 3 and 4 in proper position.-

' A display card or advertisingcard is indicated at 6. This card has a score'or fold as indicated at 6. Extending upwardly from the body portion of the carton is a hinged part 7. To the hinged part 7 the display card is glued or otherwise attached. The portion of the display card 6 which lies below the scored portion 6 extends within the folded members 1 lying adjacent the end 1 which form parts of the sides of the cartons and are held in position by the contents of the carton. A sufiicient pressure is exerted upon these folded in portions so that there is a frictional engagement between the lower part of the display card 6 and the members of the carton with which it engages.

When the c'arton is in its closed or folded position the display member. 6 is folded inwardly beneath the covers 3 and 4, but when the carton is opened the display member 6 is bent upwardly and is held in its upward position by the f iction of the lower portion below the score 6 of the display card 6.

It will be seen that the area of engagement between the lower portion of the display card and the parts of the carton with which it engages is considerable, .and hence the frictional contact developed is suflicient -to hold the sign or display card in its proper elevated position without danger of over.

Referring to Fig. 6 of the drawings it will be seen that the body of the carton is formed with a body portion 1*- and the sides are formed by folding the parts 1 and 1, the parts 1 and 1 being first folded upon themselves, thereby forming a double thiclo ness side wall for the carton. The ends of the carton are indicated at 1 and 1 to It will thus be seen that spect to the end of the body of the which are attached side extending flaps that fold in and engage with the side portions 1 and 1, to hold the end members in upright position. The side members 1 are provided with extending flaps 1 which fold inwardly and engage with the end members 1 and 1 to fully lock the side members and end members in their proper position.

The portion 7 with which the display card cooperates is indicated in Fig. 6, and by referring to Fig. 8 the method of forming the "display card is also shown and as before explained a portionof the display card above the score 6 therein is secured by gluing or otherwise to the extension 7, while the portion of the display card 6 which is below the score 6* is unattached and lies in frictional engagement with the extensions 1 lying adjacent to the end 1 which engage therewith when the carton is in folded condition.

The, easel member as before stated comprises thebottom member 2 the side members 2, and the end member which is formed by the tabs 2 which when in folded position are secured to each other by the interlocking of the notches 2 The cover member 3 is, as before stated, secured to the easel at the point where the bottom and end members unite and the fold in the coveris indicated at 3. Secured to the cover and in the present construction formed as a continuation of the cover is apart 9 which has extensions 9. This part 9 and extensions 9 ovelie the end member 1"and .the extension secured thereto when the box is in folded condition. This is indicated in Fig. 7 The cover member 4 with the scores A and 4" is'formed as a continuation of the bottom member 2* of the easel part and as a continuation of the end member 1 of the body of the carton,

so that when the part 9 is brought into contact with the part 1 as shown in Fig. 7 there is obtained a hinged connection between the cover members 3 and 4 with recarton itself.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. A display carton having a body portion, an easel member adapted to support the body portion in inclined position, and memtom portions of the easel respectively with the body portion whereby the easel is held against tipping, said members being foldable to a position on top of the said body portion of the carton.

2. A display carton having a body portion, an easel member which is adapted to support the body in inclined position, a member secured to the upper end of said easel and extendingalong the bottom of the body portion, a second member secured to the easel at the lower portion thereof and extending .bers permanently securing the top and botalong the surface upon which the carton is supported both of said members being connected with the body of the carton.

3. A display carton having a body portion, an easel member, members permanently v and hingedly secured to said body portion and to said easel member, one of said members being connected with the easel portion at one end thereof, the other of said members being connected with the easel member at another end thereof, said members being foldable to a position on top of the carton when the carton is in closed condition.

4. A display carton comprisng a body portion, an easel member, two members which are hingedly conne'ctedwith the body portion adjacent one end thereof, one of said members being connected with the easel member at one end thereof, the other of the members being connected with the easel at the other end thereof.

5.- A display carton having a body portion, an easel member, a cover for said carton comprising superimposed members which are hingedly connected with the body portion and also hingedly connected with opposite ends of the easel member.

6. A display carton comprising a body portion, an easel member, a covercomprising superimposed members which are hingedly connected at one end of the body ortion of the carton and adapted to old around an end of the carton, said cover members being respectivel secured to opposite ends of the easel mem r.

7. A display carton comprising a body portion, an easel member having. a bottom member, side members, and an' end member which connects the side members, a member hingedlyconnected to the easel, adjacent the intersection of the bottom and end members thereof, asecond member connected to thebottom member of the easel both of said members being hingedly connected with the carton adjacent an end thereof.

8. A display carton comprising a body portion having an open top, an easel member having a bottom member, side members, and an end member which connects the side members, a member secured to the easel at the junction of the end members with the bottom member, another member hingedly connected with the bottom member of the easel both of said members being hingedly securedto the body portion of the carton adjacent a top edge, said members being ton.

' 9. A carton formed from a single blank comprising a body portion having a bottom, side and end'members, a cover composed of superimposed members, an easel having a bottom side and end members, the members of the cover and the easel being formed integrally.

10. A display carton having a body portion formed with folded end members, a hinged member at one end of the carton, a display card having a dependin portion, said display card being secure to said hinged member, the depending portion of the display card extending inside of the folded end portions and in frictional engagement therewith.

11. A display carton having a body portion with folded end members, a member hingedly secured to the end of the carton, a display card secured to said extending member, said display card having a score there, in, and a freely depending portion below the score, said freely depending portion extending within the folded end portion of the carton and in frictional engagement therewith.
