Lii lit z tit Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24 1920.,
Application filed January 16, 1919. Serial 2-10. 271,366.
io plication for Letters Patent is based is an improvement in the means -tor supporting superheaters designed and used with certain types of marine boilers.
in. boilers of this general type it has been ing which, is superposed on that containing the boiler proper, and to employ baiiles in connection with the boiler tubes to deflect the hot gases to a greater or less extent, so that they may pass over the superheater tubes, in such cases, however, no adequate provision, so far as 1 am aware, has ever been. prop'osed for properly supporting the superheater and sustaining its weight, which is applicabie to the ordinary or typical form of boiler 01 "this class.
my improvement, however, 1 make such provision in a thoroughly practicable and ecoiioiiiicai manner and by its use i giro enablet to gain ready access to the superat any time for purposes oi? repia -ereguiation or repair. Said improve- 1 est in terms consists in supporting it. superheater in a casing above the boiiei' s a marine or cross drum boiler on sting upon the steam and date one end and the up er headers o v v, 1 savings .vlllCii V a ,i specific means ii iii J. i .LI' LU secuiiag; Lil

is an enlarged sectional detaii or too supports in, the superheater proposed to inclose the superheater in a cas- 6 is an enlarged view in side elevation '1 andlront section of the superheater.
I iinilar letters of reference in the several figures indicate corresponding parts,
il hc general character of the boiler to which the improvement is applicable and the general nature of the support for the suoerheater proper are shown in Fig. 1, in which 1 indicates the boiler casing, 2 the inclined bank of tubes, 3 the steam and water drum,
and the casing supported over the boiler tubes andinclosingz the superheater.
By reference to Fig. 3 itwill be seen that the superheater tubes 5 rest upon cross beams 6, suspended by rods 7 from upper beams 8. These upper and weight supwe porting beams are in turn supported by vertical beams 9, carried by beams 16, which latter are supported at one end by brackets 10 upon the cross steam and water drum I and at the other end by brackets 11 pieced We upon the upper headers of boiler tubes.

I above iescr bed so i r in boi ers of aters on e casi boiler tubes a 21 i su oorz' iec 'edl more i i it may be stated that a superheater supported upon the boiler will partake of the motion of the latter and move in unison with it. This avoids straining of the pipe con- -nection between the superheater and the boiler which would not be true in a system in which the superheater is supported wholly or in part from the boiler setting or casing. This is an important consideration in marine boilers of the type herein described.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a cross drum water tube boiler, the combination with main horizontal beams supported at one end upon the steam and water drum, and at the other end upon the upper headers of the boiler tubes, of upper beams and vertical supports therefor resting on the said main horizontal beams, a
superheater suspended from the said upper beams and a casing ilk-losing the superheater as set forth. I
2. In a cross drum water tube boiler-of the kind herein described, the combination with main horizontal beams supported at one end by brackets upon the steam or water drum, and at the other end by brackets upon the upper headers of the boiler tubes, of upper beams, vertical supports between the same and the main horizontal beams, a superheater supported by suspension rods from the said upper beams and a casing in closing said super-heater.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'flix my signature.
