Description

* rrED STATES PATENT MINOTT W. SEWALL, DECEASED, LATE OF NEW YORK, N. Y., BY SUSANN E. SEWALL, EXECUTRIX, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE BABCOOK & WILCOX COMPANY, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
STEAM-BOILER.
Specification of Letters mm.
Patented Nov. 30, 1915.
Application filed July 30, 1914. Serial No. 854,156.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that MINoT'r W. SEWALL, late a citizen of the United States and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam boilers and more particularly to a system of tubing, part of which constitutes a water-protected roof for the furnace of a Stirling boiler.
The inventionwill be understood by reference'to the accompanying drawing which is a vertical section partly in outline,-of a Stirling boiler with the present improvement.
In the drawing the numerals 1, 2 and 3 indicate'the usual upper transverse stcamand water drums of a Stirling boiler, these drums being connected by banks of generating tubes witha lower mud drum 4, all as usual and well-known in this class of boilers.
7 by a row of tubes 10 curved at their lower ends and having a general upward inclination. The tubes 10 support a bafile 11 extending from chamber 9 toward the rear of the combustion chamber, said tubes and bafile constitutingthe roof of the furnace chamber. Bafile 11 terminates short of the plane of the bridge wall so as to permit the gases to escape into the secondary combustion chamber above the roof and among the tubes of the first bank. Any approved system of baffling may be employed for the generating tubes. The drawing shows the standard baflle 12' at the rear of the first bank of tubes'l3.
A series of substantially vertical tubes 14 I connect chamber 9 with the front steam and water drum 1, thereby permitting a free circulation from drum 4: through the sup- 9 and tubes 14 to the front upper drum.
What is claimed and desired to besecured by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A water tube boiler having upper transverse steam and water drums and a intermediate the levels of the upper and lower drums, tubes connecting saidsupplcmental drum and chamber, and tubes connecting said chamber with the front drum.
2. A water tube boiler having upper transverse steam and water drums and a.
lower mud drum, banks of generating tubes connecting said drums, a. supplemental drum located in front of said lower drum,
tubes directly connecting said lower and.
supplemental drums, a transverse water upper chamber intermediate the levels of the up per and lower drums, tubes connecting. said supplemental drum and chamber, a bafle extending from said chamber rearwardly,
said tubes and bafile constituting a roof for the boiler furnace',. -and tubes connecting said chamber with the frontupper drum.
3. A water tube :boilerhaving upper transverse steam andx'wa'ter drums an lower mud drum, banks of generating tubes connecting said drums, a. supplemental drum located in front of said lowerdrum,
tubes directly connecting said lower and.
su lemental drums a transverse Water chamber intcrmediate'the levels of the upper and lower drums and substantially under the front upper drum, tubes connecting said supplemental drum and water chamber-and constituting a water-protected roof for the furnace, and tubes connectingsaid chamber with the front upper drum.-
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
, SUSANN E. SEWALL, Emcmltm'm of the estate of Minott W. Sewail,
deceased.
