9 at Highland Park, in the county of Wayne Vided with a and Stateof Michigan, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Generators; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the'invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appert'ains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this'specification.
My invention relates to water-tube steam generators, and consists in certain improve-..
ments in the construction and operation of steam generators hereinafter described and pointed out. I

In the drawing A indicates a feed-water receiving drum; B indicates a lower or muddrum; C'indicates a water-drum; and D indicates the steam-drum; A indicates the feed-water supply pipe and B indicates the blow-0E pipe, and D indicates the steam exit connection."
7 From the feed-water drum A a bank of down-flow tiibes E of relatively small di-b ameter (for example 2%) leads to the muddrum B. From the mud-drum B to the water-drum G is a bank of up-flow tubes F of relatively large diameter (for example 311*). From the water-drum C to the steam drum D .is a bank of tubes of less diameter (for example 3) and from the steam drum D to the feed-water drum A is a bank of equalizing tubes H of less diameter than the tubes E (for example 2) the function of which is to balance the pressure between the steamdrum D, and the feed-water drum'A.

K indicates the front wall of the boiler setting; K indicates the rear wall thereof; L indi cates the top Or cover thereof and L indicates the smoke exit therefrom. lVithin this setting I arrange a system of battle walls to guide the fire gets along and among the tubes of the several banks an example of which is shown in the drawing as follows: Minconvenient system of bafile dicates a baffle above the bank of tubes F from the lower or mud-drum B; and M indicates a vertical bafileextending from the upper end of the battle M, part way across the bank of tubes G, so that the fire-gas will flow upwardly under the baffle M'among the bank of tubes F and between the vertical bafiieM and the water-drum C, and over the upper edge of the baffleM.
In front of the feed-water drum A, bank of tubes E, and tubes H is a bai'lle N, which extends downwardly from the steam-drum D and is provided with a rearward extension N, which extends part way across the bank of tubes E; and above the extension N is another baiile'N which extends from the rear wall K of the boiler setting forwardly part way across the bank of tubes E, so that the fire-gas will flow downwardly from the upper bank of tubes G around the extension N of the baiile N, and among thetubes of 'the bankE, around the front end of the baflie N and to the smoke exit L; also back i of the equalizing tubes H, is placed a baflie O. From the foregoing description of the construction and arrangement of my im proved steam generator and setting therefor, it will be seen that the largest tubes F are exposed to the fire-gas at the point of its greatest degree of heat, and that the water flowing therethrough is, by the smaller tubes comprising the upper bank' Gr, divided into smaller columns at a point in the setting where the heat of the fire-gas is less intense;
and lastly in the final upward pass of the fire-gas, at the point in the setting where the teinperatureof the fire-gas is lowest, the water in the bank of tubes E flowing from the feed-water drum into the mud-drum is divided into small columns and will absorb a substantial amount of heat therefrom because of the increased amount of surface exposed to the fire-gas. The equalizing tubes H, being cut off from the fire-gas by means of baflie-walls, do not absorb any heat, so
that there will be no upward flow of water therein, and consequently no ebullition of the water in the-steam-drum D. In operation the water supplied to the feed-water drum A will flow through tubes E to the mud-drum D, being raised to the steaming point while passing therethrough. From' the mud-drum it flows upward through the tubes F to the drumG, fromwhich it enters the upper and smaller tubes G'wherein it is converted into steam, so that little or no water enters the upper or steam drum It will thus be seen that thereis little or no circulation of water from the steam drum'D to the feed-Water drum A through the tubes H, and that by reason of the tubes of different sizes I am enabled to convert all the Water into steam during its passage from the feed-Water drum to the steam-drum D, so that it is not necessary to pass the water a secondtime through the boiler.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention so as to enable others to construct and utilize the same, I do not desire to be limited to the exact form and dimensions shown and described, as many alterations can be made therein Without departing from the scope of my invention; but What I claim as new an desire' to secure by Letters-Patent is In a steam generator, a boiler setting comprising substantially i'ront, rear, side Walls,
cover, and fire-hack Wall, mud drum supported on said firewall, a water drum suptwcengsaicl maid drum and said steam libcrating drum, a series of down-flow equalizing tubes connecting said steam liberating and said feed water drums, a series of relatively small down-flow water tubes between said feed-Water and mud drums, a series of up-floW Water tubes of relatively large diameter between said muddrum and water drums and immediately over the furnace grates, and a series of up-floW Water tubes of intermediate diameter between said Water and steam liberating 'drums'immediately under said cover, substantially as described;
