'boilers, arranged to insure the formation of highly superheated steam. Another object isto provide a superheater which can be readily applied to new boilers as well as to boilers as now constructed. Another object is to eliminate the brick curtain wall in the rear portion of the boilers now used to prevent short circuiting of the products of combustion in their passage through the boiler.
With these and other objects inview, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the superheater as applied to a water tube boiler of the horizontal type having a longitudinal steam drum with front and rear water legs connected with each other by boiler tubes;
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the superheater as applied and with part shown in elevation Fig. 3 is a face view partly in section of a modified form of the superheater in position; and
Fig. 4% is a face View ofanother modified form of the superheater in position.
The boiler illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises essentially two steam drums 10 connected with front and rear headers or legs 11 and 12 mounted in the usual manner in the brickwork or housing 13 of the boiler, and the said headers 11 and 12 are connected with each other by the boiler tubes 14:. Front and rear bafiie plates 15 and 16 are arranged transversely of the boiler tubes 14- to cause the products of combustion to travel in a zigzag direction from the fire box 17 to the outlet 18, as indicated by arrows in Fig. 1.
The rear brick curtain wall of the boiler is d spensed with and is replaced by a superheater header 20 through which extend the steam drums 10, as plainly indicated in F 1g. 2. The upper or top portions of the steam drums 10 are provided with openings 21 leading into the superheater header 2 0 which latter extends downward to the top of the rear bafiie plate 16 thus preventing the products of combustion from being short circuited at the second pass to the outlet 18. From the front wall of the superheater 20.extend the ends of the U- shaped circulating pipes 22 disposed horizontally in a forward direction, with the forward ends of the lower runs of sundry of the circulating pipes 22 resting on the top of the front battle plate 15 thus providing a support for the forward ends of the circulating pipes 22. The ends of each circulating pipe are spaced apart one above the other, and a baffle plate 23 extends transversely through the superheated heads 20 intermediate the said ends to insure a proper circulation of the steam through the pipes 22. One side of the header 20 is provided at its lower portion with an outlet pipe 24 for carrying off the superheated steam to an engine or other machine or apparatus in which the superheated steam is to be used. It is understood that the saturated steam from the steam drums 10 passes through the openings 21 into the superheater header 20 and down the same and then in and through the upper ends of the circulating pipes 22 and back into the lower portion of the header 20 below the baflie plate 23 to then pass through the outlet 24 to the place where the superheated steam is used. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the circulating pipes 22 are disposed across the second pass and hence are subjected to the high heat of the products of combustion to insure the formation of highly superheated steam. It will also be noticed that the superheater header 20 takes the place of the usual brick curtain wall in the rear portion of the boiler and as the header provides a firm metal structure the products of combustion are not liable to be short circuited as is so frequently the case in brick walls if some of the bricks drop out.

The pipe 82 is provided with a valve 34: under the control of the attendant to permit the latter to open the valve periodically for the steam to pass from the drum 10 through the hollow stay bolts onto the circulating pipes 22 to clean the latter of soot or other extraneous matter that may have accumulated eXteriorly on the said circulating pipes.
Instead of arranging the circulating pipes 2 only at the lower portion of the superheater header 20, the said circulating tubes may be arranged along the bottom, sides and top with corresponding baffle plates 23 between the inlet and outlet ends of the corresponding tier of said circulating pipes, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. It will be noted by reference to this figure that the uppermost battle plates 23 have turned down terminals reaching to the top of the drums 10 on opposite sides of the steam outlets 21 to conduct the steam from the steam drums into the upper portion of the header above the uppermost baflle plates to pass through the corresponding entrance ends of the 11 per tier of circulating pipes 22 to then circa ate through the next tier of circulating pipes below and so on through the several tiers until the steam in a highly superheated condition reaches the outlet 24.
The superheater ma .be applied to boilers as now constructe but in this case the superheater header 20 is connected at the top by a pipe 50 with the top of the corresponding steam drum 10, as plainly indicated in Fig 4, otherwise the construction is the same as above explained relative to the superheater shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a. steam boiler, a housing, a steam drum mounted in the top of said housing, boiler headers in communication with the steam drum, boiler tubes connecting the said headers with each other, spaced front and rear bafiie plates at the said boiler tubes, and a superheater having a header and circulating pipes extending from one face of the said superheater header, said circulating pipes supported upon one of the said baffle plates, the said superheater header received about said steam drum and filling the space within said boiler housing from the top thereof to the other of said balile plates to form a curtain wall in the boiler said steam drum having openings at the top to allow the steam to pass from the drum into the superheater and through the circulating pipes.
