Description

J. l. KELLEY.
GARTER FASTENING.
APPLICATDON FILED MAR. 1920.
Patented July 13. 1920.
UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN I. KELLEY, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARTER-FASTENING.
Specifica tion of Letters Patent. Patented J u ly 13 192() Application filed March 1, 1920. Serial No. 362,498.
5 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN I." KELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Garter-Fastenings,
of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to'improve Fig. 4 is a view showmg the location of i the pin in the inclined slot when the garter becomes slack.
The garter illustrated in the drawing is one to be applied to the calf of the leg and is used for holding mens half-hose. 1 is a triangular piece of fabric. 2 is an elastic band having a loop 3 atone endandan adjustable plate 4 to which the free end of the bandis attached, and which forms the loop. In the loop is one portion 5 of my improved fastening. 6 is a plate attached to the triangular piece 1 by stitching, in the present instance, as shown in Fig. 1. The plate has a headed pin? adapted to the slot 8 in the part 5. It will be noticedthat this part 5 also has a narrow, elongated slot 9 through which the fabric of the loop 3 extends. This slot is connected with an en larged slot 10 of suiiicient width to allow the head 11 of the pin 7 to pass readily through it. This slot 10 is connected to the narrow slot 8 by aninclined slot 12 of the width of the narrow-slot so that, if the pin 7 should pass into the slot-12, it cannot be detached from the part 5 unless it passes into the enlarged slot 10.
By arranging the slot 12 at the angle shown and having the enlarged slot some distance from the slot 8, any slack movement slot through which of the pin will not detach the garter and even when the pin isin the slot12, as in Fig.
4, the slot being inclined thepin has a tendency to return to'the slot 8 so that under all conditions one end of the garter will not become detached from the other unless the pin enters the enlarged slot 10.
In the present instance, secured to the ex tension'13 of the triangular portion 1 is a looped wire 14 adapted to engage a headed pin 15 carried by a tab 16, also secured to the extension 13. This fastening engages the stocking,
While I have described the fastening as I.
particularly adapted to certain types of garters, it will be understood that it can be "used with other types of garters, or similar devices, where such a fastener is desirable.
I claim: 7 1. The combination in a fastener, of two sections, one section having a headed pin,
the passage of the head of the pinof the I other section, said slot being at one side and .back of the longitudinal slot; and a diagonal narrow slot connecting the large slot with the rear end of the narrow longitudinal central slot.
2. The combination of a garter having a body 'sectionyan elastic band; a fastening device consisting of two sections, one section having a slot through which the elastic band extends, the other section having a bar around which the stitching is passed to secure this section to the garter, a headed pin on this section, the other section having an enlarged slot at one end to allow for the passage of the head of the pin of the other section and having a centrally located longi tudinal, narrow slot; and a diagonal slot connecting the wide slot with the narrow slot, said diagonal slot also being narrow,
preventing the withdrawal of the pin, the
wide slot communicating with the narrow the band of the garter JOHN I. KELLEY.
is passed.
