SURGICAL SP LINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1920.
Application filed July 1Q, 1919. Serial No.-311,266.
To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, JOHN J. RnNoIs, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Splints, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements'in self sustaining splints.
The invention has to do with a mechanical substitute for the erectile tissue ofthe corwhich it is applied. An important feature is the arched supports along the underside on each side of the longitudinal center of the member, whereby. the impotent organ is more effectually supported.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the followingspecification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown andwherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a splint embodying theinvention,
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, v
Fig. 3 is an underside view of the same,
Fig.4; is a perspective view of a modified form,
Fig. 5 is a detail of the same, and
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional detail showing the rubber jacket.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates an elongated member. The member is open along the longitudinal center of itsbottom and along each side of this opening are arched sustaining elements 2. The elements 2 are curved or bent upward at their forward ends and connected by an upstanding and rearwardly inclined loop 3 adapted to engage over the end of the genital organ. The elements 2 are curved downwardly and inwardly to a more marked degree at the inner end of the member and have their inner ends connected by a circular band 4 adapted to engage around the base of the genital organ. Bracing ribs 0 and 6 respectively extend from the central portion of the sustaining elements 2 to points of juncture with the band whereby the parts are supported by the band. a
The member is preferably formed of spring metal or equivalent material and the parts coated or incased in a acket 7 of rubber so that no sharp edges are presented. The arched shape of the elements provides a support which tends to lift the middle portion of the impotent organ and thereby holds the organ ina natural position. The ex- .pansible nature of the member makes it adjustable so it will embrace the organ with sufficient closeness to make for a snug fit and at the same time create a pressure thereon conductive to desired results.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modified form which permits of greater expansion at the outer end and includes less structure thus exposing more of the surface of the genital organ. In this structure the splint is composed of elongated arched sustaining elements 8 having the same function as the elements 2. The inner ends of the elements are connected by a circular band 9. An upstanding loop 10 connects the-outer ends of the elements and inclined inwardly like the loop 3. This loop 10 however, is hinged at its center as indicated at 11. The hinge permits the ends of the loop and the elements to be spread apart and more readily placedover the end of the or an.
In adjusting the spllnt the latter is spread or expanded transversely and slipped onto the impotent organ.
l/Vhen released the.
band, loop and sustaining elements will embrace the genital organ and exert a gentle pressure at the same time closely fitting an supporting the organ.
What I claim is:
A surgical splint for the purpose described including a pair of elongated thin flat metallic bars arranged in spaced relation and diverging from substantially the central portions of the bars toward the rear of the same, aspring yoke connecting the rear ends of the bars and adapted to allow the same to spring apart, pairs of spiral braces connected 'between the intermediate portions of the bars and said ring and diverging from such intermediate portions of the bars to the ring, and a spring ring connected between the -forward ends of the bars and adapted to allow the bars to spring apart.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
