Application filed August 5. 1919.
lie it ltnown that l, Trump SPENCER, a citizen o'l the United States, residing,` at lliillbury, in the county ot lVorcester and btnte of Irlessachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in bliuttles; ond i do hereby declare the following` to be a lull, clear, and exact deseription ot the invention7 such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to an improvement in loom shuttles and particularly to an im* provemeni", in bobbin holders for shuttles. 'the object oi the invention is to reorganize and improve the construction oi' bobbin holders to simplify, strengthen and render them more ellicient and better adapted to the pin-poses :For which they are designed.
'io the ao'oniiplishment ci this object and such others :is may appear, the invention consists oi the shuttle hereinafter described and claimed. ln the drawings illustrating` the preferred emboiiliment ot the invention, Figure l is a plan o'l`4 a portion ot a shuttle showing the improved bobbin holder; Fig. is a. side elevation, partly in section; Fig. is a horizontal se tion on line 3 3, Fig.
Lil; is a cross-section on line L.'L--/l, and Fig. is a plan of a sheet metal from which the improved bobbin holder is termed.
llebbin holders as heretofore constructed have included a bobbin spring, a shield niii-.odiar7 a spacer :'oiperatinp; lwith the bobbin spring l'o maintain the ends thereof in spare-.l relation, ami a separate shim conp; with the shield and bobbin spring in maintaininnl the bobbin holder to as in np; is secured. to the shuttle body by a boit cxtendenl transversely through the shuttle body and bobbin spring. rlhe shield member is sec red in place by a Wood screw screwed into the top o'l" the body portion ot' the shuttle.
The present invention contemplates bobbin holder in Whirh the usual bobbin spring` cooperates with an improved shield member. rihe improved shield member does away with the use of the usual spaceri and lthe usual shims are constructed integrally with the shield member. T he construction is such that the shield member is secured in operative relation to the bobbin spring Specification of Letters Patent.

by the cooperation of the usual transverse bolt extended through the-shuttle body and through the bobbin spring` and a portion of the shield member itself. The improved construction of bobbin holder possesses many advantageous features as Will be pointed out.
rllhe illustrated embodiment oi' the invention is described as follows: The shuttle body l() is provided with the bobbin holder 12 adapted to lit into the usual recess therein. The bobbin holder l2 comprisesa bobbin spring l5 olA Yusual or preferred constrnetion.,the leavesloii which are adapted to receive and hold the butt ot a boblin. A shield member 2l) is adapted to coperate with the bobbin spring l5 to Jform the complete bobbin holder l2. The shield member 2l) comprises a bottom plate 25 haV- ing' laterally extended [langes 26, an inclined guide portion 2i' end a top plate 2S. rihe top plate Ztl is provided with laterally extenijled flanges 2S) which are adapted to 'fnltil the 'functions oiE the separate shim used in previous constructions. The inclined guide portion 2T is provided with inwardly and rearwardly extended arms 3() having' parallel portions 3l spaced a short distance from one another and arranged to co'perato with the rear portion of the bobbin spring to serve as a spacer, being iorced thereby into Contact with one another when the bobbin holder is assembled. he parallel portions 3lA are provided with holes 3Q arranged therein so as to cooperate with the usual holes in the bobbin spring` l5 and to perm it the usual bolt' to pass therethrough and 'to thereby secure the bobbin spring l5 :md improveifl shield member 2O together in the recess lin the body portion l() el the shnttlc. thus eliminating' the Wood screw heretofore employed to secure the top of the shield member to the top of the shuttle body. rEhe top plate 28 is provided With the stamped up portion 37 which serves to strengthen and reinforce the same.
it Will be observed that the construction of the improved shield member is such as to enable it to be formed from a single sheet metal blank, as indicated inFig. 5. This feature enables the bobbin holder to be made at considerably less expense than previous bobbin holders.
1When the shield member is secured in an operative position in the body portion of the shuttle, the top and bottom plates 28,
are held by the iiange portions 29 engaging Vshoulders orV grooves in the body portion of the shuttle. It is to be observed that the flange portions are not secured to and do not form part of the bobbin spring 15 so that the inclined portion 27 of the shield member is permitted to yield or spring considerably more than previous shield members which were held against the bobbin spring more or less rigidly.
` inclined shield member are transmitted through the arms to the bolt where they are absorbedby the body portion of the shuttle. In this manner the contour and shape, together with the resiliency of the shield member, is maintained for long periods of time so that the usefulness and life of the bobbin holder is prolonged. Y
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described it is to be understood that the same may be embodied in other forms within the scope of the" following claims.
"1. A' shuttle having, in combination, a body portion, a bobbin holder comprising a bobbin spring, and a shield member, the 'shield member'having an inclined portion and two rearwardly extended arms formed integrally therewith adapted to coperate with the bobbin spring to serve as a spacer therefor.
2. A shuttle having, in combination, a body portion, and a bobbin holder comprising a bobbin spring having holes in the rear portion thereof and a shield member having an inclined portion and two rearwardly extended arms formed integrally therewith and provided with holes therein adapted to coperate with the holes in said bobbin spring to permit the insertionV of a bolt therethrough for the purpose of securing the bobbin spring and Vshield inthe shuttle body.
3. A shuttle having, in combination, a Y
body portion anda bobbin holder comprising aV bobbin spring and a shield member, the shield member having a top plate, a borttom plate, an inclined portion extended from the top to the bottom plate, and two spacingarms extended rearwardly from the inclined Vportion formed integrally therewith and adapted to coperate Vwith the bobbin spring to serve as arspacer, and having provision vfor securing the shield member to the body portion of the shuttle.
4. A shuttle having, in combination, a body portion and a bobbin holder comprising a bobbin spring and a shield member, said shield member having top and bottom flanges, an inclined portion, and two rear-Y PHILIP SPENCER.
