'specification or Letters Patent. Y Patented J uly 6, 1920.
Application led January 17, 1920. Serial No. 352,064.
Be it known that VI, PHILIP S. MEDAR'I, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis,
tate of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Playground-Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of play ground or pleasure swings in which the seat member is held in a suspended condition by a pair of pliable side connections,.and has Vfor its objects To provide a simple and durable structural formation and association of parts, wherein the seat member is connected to pliable suspension members of the swing in a durable and substantial manner with an elimination of the ordinary rapid fretting and wear of parts in actual use. f
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1, is a front elevation of a swing embodying the present improvements.
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail section of a hand hold portion of the swing suspension member.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
Refer-ring yto the drawing, 1 designates the seat member preferably of the usual flat board form, to the respective'ends of which are attached angle bracket members, each of which is formed with horizontal flange or web 2 for attachment to theunderside of the seat member 1, and with a vertical flange or web 3 of a triangular shape and having at its upper end out-turned flanges or ears 4 formedV with alined orifices for the reception of a pivot pin or rivet of the rocking head or clevis now to be described.
5 designates rocking heads or clevises individual to the aforesaid angle bracket members, with each clevis 5 pivoted between the flanges or ears 4 by a pivot pin or rivet 6. At their upper ends the clevises' 5 are provided with alined pivot orifices arranged in right-angle relation to the aforesaid pivot pins 6 and adapted toL receive pivot pins or rivets 7 for connection to the'lower ends of the suspension members of the swing.
8 designates the pair of suspension members of the swing, each of which in the preferred form ofthe vpresent invention shown in the drawing comprises an upper chain portion of member 8 carrying at its upper end `an attaching hook 9, an intermediate rod metal portion or member 8 connected to the lower end of the chain portion 8 by a link l0, and a lower rod metal portion or member 8 pivotally connected to the lower end of the intermediate portion 8 and toa head or clevis 5 by a pivot pin or rivet 6 aforesaid. In the preferred detail construction shown, the upper and lower ends of the intermediate portion or member 8 are screw-threaded for engagement with heads 11 which in turn are formed for pivotal connection to the upper chain portion 8 and to the lower rod portion .8 as shown more particularly in Fig. 3.
12 designate hand holds or grips carried by the aforesaid intermediate portions or members 8 of the suspension members of the swing. In the present construction the hand holds or grips 12 consist of sections of rubber or like tubing slipped over the intermediate members 8 and held in place by cup shape caps 13, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Such construction is shown and substantially claimed in my prior application, Serial No. 338,424, filed November 17,
Having thus fully'described my said inventionV what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a swing, the combination of a seat,
the respective pivot aXes having a` righta pair of flexible suspension members, and attachments between the seat and suspension members, each attachment comprising an angle-bracket having a horizontal attaching flange, a vertical flange of a triangular shape andl formed With apair of out-turnedk orced ears, and a clevis pivotally attached to said ears and to the lowel i end of a Suspension member, the respective pivot axes having'a right-angle relation.
Signed at St. Louis, Missouri, this 12th day of January 1920.
