Description
APPLICATION FILED OCT. II. 1919.
Patanted June 29, 1920.
NIr o v STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES. H. nnYivoLns, 0F HERMOSA' BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
BALL-THROWING- am zinnnoisme DEVICE.
Application filed October 11, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. REY- NOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hermosa Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of. California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ball-Throwing and Exercising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present sole invention is the provision of a device that is highly eflicient for ball-throwing and exercising purposes.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my novel device as arranged for use as an exerciser.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts ar ranged to adapt the device for ball-throwing purposes.
F ig. 3 is a view, partly in plan and partly in section, taken at right angles to Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel device comprises a stick, preferably of wood, on the side of which are secured'cushions 2;
' said cushions being positioned adjacent to the ends of the stick.
Extending through the stick adjacent to one end thereof is the threaded shank 3 of a hook 4:, and on said shank is a wing-nut 5.
Fixed transversely in the stick at the transverse center thereof is a tubular section 6, and ournaled in the said tubular section 6 is the inner transverse portion 7 of an open frame 8 which is provided at its outer end with a longitudinal central outwardly extending stem 9. The said open frame 8 constitutes the preferredspecific type of ball holder. At its outer end the said stem 9 is threaded to receive a wingnut 10.
At 11 is the ball of the device in which is a bore 12 to receive the stem 9.
\Vhen it is desired to use my novel device as an exerciser, the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1; the stick being grasped adjacent to the ends thereof and swung in front of the body of the exerciser, with the Specification of Letters Patent. ;1 1;e t June 29, 1920 Serial No. 329,900.
result that the ball holder 8 will be swung 011 the stick and the ball 11 will be caused to forc bly bring up against first one of the cushions and then the other cushion.
When it is desired to use the device for ball-throwing purposes, the parts are arrangedas shown in Fig. 2. In this use the stlck 1s grasped in both hands at points remote from the hook 4, and the device is forcibly swung forwardly from over the shoulder of the user. So long as the stick is in motion, the ball will be crowded back against the adjacent cushion 2. When, however, the movement of the stick is suddenly checked as at the end of the stroke, the stem 9 of the holder will spring in a direction away from the said cushion and the ball, because of the impetus, will be caused to leave the said stem.
Manifestly in the first use of the device,
the hook 4: and nut 5 may be altogether omitted, Fig. 3.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that notwithstanding the simplicity and inexpensiveness of my novel device, the same is possessed of efiiciency when used as an exerciser, and also when used as a ball thrower.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination of a stick, a ball holder including a stem, said holder pivotally connected to said stick to swing thereon and a ball carried on the stem of the holder and removable therefrom.
2. The combination of a stick, cushions on the stick adjacent to the ends thereof, a swinging ball holder connected to the stick and having an outer resilient stem portion, a ball carried on the stem of theholder, removable means for securing the ball on said stem, and means detachable from the outer portion of the holder to hold said portion against movement away from the stick.
3. The combination of a stick, cushions thereon adjacent to the ends thereof, a transverse tubular section fixed to the central portion of the stick, an open, swinging frame having an inner transverse portion journaled in said tubular section, a resilient stem extending outwardly from the outer portion of said frame and threaded, a nut on said stem, a ball removably secured on the stem between the frame and nut, and a g? i I 1,345,241
hook to hold thejouter' portion of the frame swinging ball holder pivoted .to the stick, against movementaway from the stick, said and a ball carried by said holder; said ball hook having a threaded shank extending being adapted to first bring up against one 10 '7 through the stick and being equipped With a cushion and then against the other.
nut. a g In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
4. The combination of a stick, cushions Y thereon adjacent to the ends thereof, a a CHARLES H. REYNOLDS.
