LUIS B. nocnsTmim/or ENDICOTT, NEW YonK.
cnxsr.
T0 all/whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUIS B. HOOHSTEIN,. a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Endicott, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have .invented a new and Improved Clasp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in clasps and it pertains more particularly to clasps of the pivoted type. a
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character especially adapted for retaining the open ends of a box or pasteboard carton in closed relation.
A further object of the invention is to I provide a device of this character which may be entirely'removed when in its inoperative position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will lie fiat to the box when in its operative position.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the side of a carton partly broken away and showing the device in its operative position in full lines and in its. inoperative position in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and showing a portion of the the leg portions 6 are bent at their point of juncture to form a loop 7 Each of the legs 6 has its free end terminating in a rightangular portion 8, the other end of which is in turn bent at right angles to form inwardly, disposed hooked extremities 9.

Application filed December 1s, 1 919. Serial 1vo'. '34 5,7ss. r
' The U-shaped member B is preferably curved in conformation and is formed from resilient wire. This curved U-shaped member Bis provided on the free end of each of its legs with a looped portion 10, which.
looped portions 10 are adapted to engage the looped portions 7 of the U-shaped member A to pivotally secure the member .B to the member A.
The reference characters 20 and 21 designate the meeting edges or flaps of a card- 7 board box or carton, and the member 20 is provided with two spaced openings 22, the .member 21 being provided with two spaced openings 23;
In operation the two members A and B are pivotally secured together as heretofore is nowpositioned so that its openings 22 will receive the'right-ang'ular ends 8 of the ith ber B is swung down to the point where it 1 engages beneath the ri ht-angular hooked extremities 9 of the rig t-angular portions 8 of the legs 6 of the. U-shaped member A.
When it is desired to remove the device, the legs of the U-shaped member B are grasped and compressed which contracts the width of the U-shaped member B to such an extent as to permit of its legs being withdrawn from beneath the right-angular extremities 9 of the legs 6, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. With the parts in this position, the curved U-shaped member B is capable of swinging about its pivotal point to release the flap 20.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5, the bail member B is provided with bent portions D which are adapted to. receive the inwardly disposed hooked extremities 9.
In some instances, it may be desired to use the device for closing the open portions of articles made offiexible material, such as canvas, burlap, and the like, and in such cases the legs of the curved U-shaped member B are provided with depressed portions as above mentioned, at that point throughout their length where they are engaged by the right-angular extremities 9 of the U- shaped member A. r
I claim I 1. Av device ofthe character described comprising a plurality of U-shapedbody portions adapted to be pivotally secured together, one of said U-shaped body portions being pivotally secured at its base to the free 7 ends of the leg members of the other of said U-shaped body portions, and means carried by the ends of the legs of the U-sh'apedbody" portion pivotally securedqat its basefor en'- gagement with the legs of the other U-c vshaped body portion near its ends to secure 7 the device in operative position.
2. A device of the characteiudescribedfcomprisinga pair of U-shaped body:mem-.
gether, and means formed on the'free'end'sQ ofeachrleg-of theffirstementioned U-shaped 7 member for'engagement with the legs of the other U-shaped memberto securethe'devic in operative position. J r.
