x z I lTED STA'EES HARRY BALDYVIN, 0F SEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT:
PAPER? CLIP.
Application filed October 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seymour, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Paper-Clip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper holding devices and more particularly to paper clips as commonly constructed of wire, and the object thereof is to provide an improved and simple construction of clip, which gives a larger number of bearings or gripping points than as heretofore constructed and which will therefore securely hold the papers in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which will permit the clip to be readily taken off or removed from the papers held thereby, the device consisting of a certain novel construction which will hereinafter be more particularly described and claimed.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinfter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fi ure 1 is a plan view of my improved paper clip and Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, my improved clip is shown as comprising a section of wire 10 bent to provide a pair of substantially V-shaped jaws 11 and 12, connected by an intermediate portion 13 forming one end of the clip. Each jaw is provided with a leg portion ll bent at acute angles slightly less than right angles or substantially so to the end or bight portion 13, which is latter slightly bowed upwardly as shown.
The other leg portion 15 of each jaw is disposed in an inclined position so as to cross each other as shown at 16, thereby providing a gripping or bearing point to hold the paper therebetween. he arms or leg portions 15 also cross the arms or leg portions 1% as shown at 17 outwardly of the bearing point 16, to further grip the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1920. Serial No. 334,107.
papers or the like to be held by the clip and the free ends of the arms 15 are curved inwardly and slightly toward the opposite end of the clip with respect to the connect mg or bight portion 15 as indicated at 18. By th1s means, two additional contacts or hearing points 19 are provided between the curved portions 18 and the armor jaws 1% immediately within the connecting portion 13, and as the extremities of the wire formed by the curved portions 18 are bent inwardly, the paper may be readily removed without fear of being torn by the extremities of the arms or jaws, in addition to the gripping action being effectively enhanced.
I have thus provided a clip having a pair of opposed V-shaped gripping jaws providing five contacts or gripping points between the said jaws where the sides or strands thereof cross each other, and in addition, the tapered ends of the jaws are disposed in divergent relation, as indicated at 20, so as to readily permit the application to the papers to be clipped. In addition, the extremities or ends 18 are extended within the area of the connecting or bight portions 13, so as to prevent the possibility of the extremities penetrating the paper or injuring the user or getting entangled with each other when packed or stored in bulk.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A paper clip comprising a single section of resilient wire bent to provide a pair of opposed substantially V-shaped resiliently contacting gripping jaws, said jaws having a connecting portion at one end and having side portions extending therefrom at acute angles in conver ing relation toward each other and rebent to extend diagonally across each other and the first named sides to provide three gripping points therebetween and an entrance portion beyond the point of crossing of said diagonally extended sides, the free ends of said diagonally extended sides being curved inwardly at acute angles substantially at right angles to cross said first mentioned sides to provide two additional bearing points.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HARRY EALDWVIN.
