IMPROVEMENT IN BROILERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 13 L414}, dated December 31,1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB WILLGING, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented an Improvement in Broilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, Plate 1, represents a portion of the top of a cook-stove having my improved broiler applied to it; Fig. 2, Plate 1, is a vertical section through the same; and Fig. 3, Plate 2, is a perspective view of the broiler, portions of which are broken away.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

This invention relates to an improvement on broilers which are constructed with a tongue on the handle for supporting the bars by the edge of a pot-hole. The object of my invention is to improve such device by making the supporting device adjustable on the handle, so that the bars can be set nearer to or further from the bed of coals, as circumstances require.

The following description of my invention will enable others skilled in the art to understand it.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents a portion of the top of a cooking-stove having two boiler-holes, a. a, through it. B represents a cross-bar, which is bowed at the uniddle of its length, and secured by a bolt and nut, g g, to the handle 0 of the boiler.

' Thebroiler consists of transverse bars 01 and longitudinal bars (1, with the curved handle 0 secured to one of the bars at in the usual well'known manner. The bowed cross-bar B rests upon the top A of the stove, and supports that end of the broiler to which the handle 0 is secured beneath the top-plate A inside of the fire-chamber, as shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose of sustaining the broiler in or nearly in a horizontal position a tongue piece, G,is secured to the back of the handle G by means of the bolt 9 and nut g. This tongue-piece extends upward and backward a short distance on the first inclined portion of the handle 0, so that when the broiler is introduced into the fire-chamber of a stove through a pot-hole, a, and the end of the tongue-piece is allowed to abut against the bottom side of the plate A, the broiler-bars will be sustained in the position required.

Prior to my invention a tongue-piece and a supporting-bar applied to the handle of a broiler for supporting the broiler over a fire have been used, but no provision has ever been made, as I verily believe, for adjusting the broiler-bars toward or from the fire. The bolt 9 which connects the tongue-piece G and the crossbar B to the handle of the broiler passes through an oblong slot, 0, made through the handle (3, so that when the nut g is loosened the bar B and tongue-piece can be adjusted nearer to or further from the broiler-bars d 01.

By this simple and easily-manipulated device I improve the broiler having a permanently-fixed tongue and bar, and am enabled to readily accomplish the object above set forth.

Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The tongue G and bar B adjustably connected to the handle of a broiler, substantially as described.
