ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1920.
Application filed March 22, 1919. Serial No. 234,260. I
' State of \Vyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification. ref.- erence being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in envelops, and has relation more particularly to an envelop of a return type, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby the same is readily reversible so that the same may be employed to advantage for two usages, and wherein the same is'efi'ectually sealed in each instance. i
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this character including a central or body flap provided with side flaps, and wherein said body fiap and side flaps are provided with end tabs or flaps coacting with the body and side flaps in a manner to permit a ready reversal of the envelop.
It is also an object'of the invention to provide a novel and improved envelop of this general character embodying a body flap and side flaps adapted to be reversibly folded as the occasions of practice may require, and wherein each of the side flaps is provided with means whereby the same may be individuallyemployed as asealing flap.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved envelop whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use,
as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: V
Figure 1 is a view'in plan of a blank from which my improved envelop is initially formed;
Fig. 2 is a View showing the blank asdisclosed in Fig. 1 partially folded;
Fig. 3 is a view in plan illustrating the envelop completely folded;
Fig. 1: is a view in plan of the envelop opposite that shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is'an enlarged sectional View taken substantially on the line 6-6 Fig. 3;
Fig. 7 is a view in plan of the blank reversedafter the envelop has been once sealed before being reversed;
Fig. 8 is a view'in plan showing the envelop as illustrated in Fig. 7 partially folded for a second use;
Fig. 9 is a view in' plan illustrating the envelop completely reversed;
Fig. 10 is a view in plan of the envelop opposite to that illustrated in Fig. 9'; r
Fig. 11 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 11--11 of Fig. 8;
Fig. 12 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 1212 Fig. 9.
As herein disclosed, my improved envelop comprises a blank consisting of the main flap 1 and the side flaps 2 and 3. Each of the flaps 2 and 3 is of a width in excess of one-half the width of the flap 1.
The flap 1 is provided with the end securing 'fiaps ,4 having their opposite end portions 5 and 6 gummed with the gummed surface of the end portion 5 adjacent the side flap 3 and the gummed extremities 6 adjacent the side flap 2. The extremities 5' are preferably square for a purpose which will hereinafter be more fully explained. The side flaps 2' and 3 are provided with the e I end securing flaps 7 and 8 respectively, and
said flaps are each provided with a gummed surface. The gummedfaces of the flaps 7 are reverse to the gummed surfaces of the flaps 8, and said gummed surfaces of the flaps 7 and 8 are also reversed relative to the adjacent extremities 5 or 60f the flaps 4.
The longitudinal marginal portion of the flap 2 and preferably at one side of the longitudinal center thereof is provided with a plurality of notches or recesses a affording therebctwecn a sealing tongue 9 having one face gummed. The gummed face of the tongue '9 is at the same side of the flap 2 as'the gummed surfaces of the flaps 7 when my improved envelop is extended or in blank. The outer longitudinal marginal portion of the flap 3, preferably to one side of its longitudinal center, is provided with the spaced notches or recesses b, affording therebetween a sealing tongue 10. A face of the tongue 10 is also gummed, and said gummed face is at the same side of the flap 3 as the gummed surfaces of the flaps 3 when the envelop is extended or in blank.
In first assembling my improved envelop,
,1 and 3, the flap 2 is folded over the flap 1 and the flap 3 and the end flaps 7 are folded to overlie the outer faeeof the flap 1 and are secured thereto by the gummed surfaces of said flaps 7. The gummed surface of the tongue 9 is then engaged with the flap 3.
hen it is desired to have access within the envelop sealed as just explained, the flaps 7 are separated from the flap Qand the tongue 9 is also separated from the flap 2 and preferably on the line 0 as indicated in Fig. 3. It is also desired that the extremities 5 of the flaps lbe. separated from said flap l by cutting on the line cl as also indicated in Fig. 3.
In reversing the envelop, and with the blank as illustrated in Fig. 'Z the flap 2 is first folded to overlie the flap 1, and then the flapsfl are folded to'overlie both the flaps 1 and 2, and the gummed surfaces of the extremity 6 of the flaps 4 are secured to the outer surface of the folded flap 2. To seal the reversed envelop the flap 3 is folded upon the flap l and the flap 2 and the flaps 8 are folded to overlie the outer face of the flap 1, or more particularly the severed flap 7, The gummed surface of the tongue 10 is then engaged with the flap 2.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an envelop constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it vill also be obvious thatmy invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying inggummed surfaces, the gummed surfaces of the end flaps of one side flap being reverse to the gummedsurfaces of the end flaps of the econd side flap, the extremities of the end flaps of the body flaw-also having gummed surfaces, the gummed surfaces at the extremities of each end flap of the body flaps being on reverse sides, the outer longitudinal marginal portions of each of the sidel'laps being provided with longitudinally spaced recesses affording therebctween asealing tongue, the surface of each of the sealing tongues being gummed, the gummed surface of one tongue being reverse to the gummed surface of the second tongue. v
2. A reversible envelop comprising a blank consisting of a body flap, sideiflaps, end flaps carried by the body flaps and the side flaps, the end flaps of the side flaps having gummed surfaces, the gummed surfaces of the end flaps of one side flap being reverse to the gummed surfaces of the end flaps of the secon d side flap, the extremities of the end flaps of the body flap also having gummedsurfaces, the gummed surfaces at the extremities of each end flap of the body fla sfbeing on reverse sides, the outer longitudinal marginal portions of each of the side flaps being provided withlongitudinally spaced, recesses affording therebetween a sealing tongue, the surface of each of the sealing tongues being gummed, the gummed surface of one tongue being reverse to. the gummed surface of the second. tongue, the sealing tongues of the side flaps being at op,- posite sides of the longitudinal center of the envelop.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
