HEEL ATTACHMENT FOR SHOES.
Application filed. March 2?, 1919. Serial no. 285,546.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. WVILLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kinston, in the county of Lenoir and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel Attachments for Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in heels for shoes and the primary object of the invention is to provide a light, durable and cheap metallic heel especially adapted to be held in position without rivets, nails, pegs or other similar fastening elements and which can be readily removed when the shoe becomes worn, so that the heel may be attached to a new shoe. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a removable shoeheel constructed entirely of metal andlcomprising two separate co-acting sections which form the complete heel when the sections are assembled and which are'constructed to bereadily separated when the heel is to be detached.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a. fragmentary elevation of a shoe showing the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the heel.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a body portion of the heel, and
Fig. 41 is a section taken on the line 4it of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like numerals of reference in dicate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, the body 1 comprises a band of metal 2 adapted to be bent to form the body of the heel. The upper marginal edge of the band is provided with inturned lugs 3 which form retaining flanges adapted to engage the only lift A attached to the heel portion of the shoe as shown in at. The marginal edge of this lift extends out- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly in the usual manner after the body of the shoe has been sewed or secured to the lift and thereby forms a convenient projectng portion to receive the retaining flanges for holding the body portion of the removableheel in position. Projecting upwardly at certain intervals on the upper marginal edge of the band are the lugs 41 which embrace the heel portion of the shoe body as shown in Fig. 1 when the device is in position. At each end of. the band I have-pro vided a spur 5 which projects inwardly and the lift Ais notched'as indicated at 6 to receive these spurs. Theends of the band are provided with extensions which arebent inwardly toward each other and form clips 7 each having a slot 8 to act in maintaining the heel plates 9 in position; The heel plate 9 comprises a metallic plate shaped to conform to the shape of the heelbody and having its marginal edge provided with upturned lngs 10 which form a flange extending around the edge of the heel plate and adapted to emhrace the band as shown to advantagein Figs. 1 to a ofthe drawing.
At the rear end the plate 9 is provided with a tongue 11 which may be bent to extend through the slot 12 intermediate the ends of the band 2 thereby providing a hinged connection for the plate and the body portion of the heel and permitting the plate to be swung toward and away from the heel when being attached or detached. At the "forward edge of the plate is an upstanding clip flange 13 which has its upper end provided with a projection let adapted to be received in a notch formed in the bottom of the shoe at this point. The ends of the flange 13 are provided with hooks 15 shaped to be received in the slots 8 when the parts are assembled.
When being mounted in position, the band is opened sufiiciently to extend around the lift A whereupon the ends of the band are held in the finger of the hand while the heel plate being hingedly connected to the band is swung upwardly to operative position whereupon the ends' 01. the band will be pressed inwardly and the hooks 12 will snap into engagement with the slots 8 on the clips '7 thereby holding the parts in assembled position and preventing casual or accidental displacement of the heel from the shoe.
The tendency-0f the band to swing outwardly causes the clips to maintain a. tight engagement with the hooks 15 so that the heel will not be displaced, In order to reband may be opened sufiiciently to disen-' gage the lift A thereby permitting the heel to be readily removed. With this construction it is possible to mount'the heel on any pair of shoes in which the heel or ordinary rubber heel has been removed and inasmuch 'as the heel will wear considerably longer than the ordinary shoe heel or'shoe it will bepossible to use the heels repeatedlyon new shoes. V
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to whatmight be considered to be the preferred or approved form of my invention; 7 I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and. arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall i withincthe scope of the appended claims.
' Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is:'
'1. A shoe heel comprising' a removable body portion and a removable heel plate attached to the body portion, and a heel hingedly mounted onthe body portion and means to releasably/hold the heel plate in engagementwith the body portion.
2. A heel'lstructure comprising a removable band having clips at its en'ds,means to retain the band in position on the shoe, a plate hingedly mounted on the band and hook members adapted to be engaged with the clip members to releasably hold the heel plate in engagement with the said band.
3. A removable heel adapted 'for attachment to a shoe comprising a band having a retaining flange adapted to engage a portion of the shoe, clip membersv formed on the ends of the band, a removable heel plate hingedly connected to the band, and hook members carried by the heel plate and adapted to engage the said clip members to maintainthe band and heel plate in assembled position when'the band is attached to the shoe. r a
4 A removable heel adapted for attachment to a shoe having a lift mounted there on, a band adapted to embrace the liftand provided with retaining flanges overlapping the lift to retain the band in position clip members formed at the end of the bandpa heel plate provided with a tongne' adapted for pivotal connection with the band ap proximately intermediate. the ends thereof whereby the said heel plate i may be. swung on the band, and hook membe rs' carried by the forward-endofjthe heel plate to engage the saidclips for maintaining theband and heel clip inposition on the heel-.7
In testimony whereof, ailix signature.
