1 Claim.
This invention :relates to a novel anti-skid attachment for shoes, and more particularly to a plate adapted to be secured vto a shoe sole and heel, and having serrated portions on the underside thereof which are adapted to effectively grip a slippery surface such as a surface covered with ice or snow to permit the'wearer to safely wa'lkon such surfaces.
More particularly, it is an aim of the invention to provide such "an attachment having a plate portion adapted to fit the underside of a sole, including its shank "portion, and to substantially correspond to the shape thereof, and to have a portion adapted to fit'th'e'underside of a shoe heel and shaped and sized to-substantially correspond tothe shape thereof so that the entire :underside of the shoe sole and heel will be covered by the attachment.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawings,

The plate portion l2, at its forward, .free end, is provided with an integral upwardly projecting portion I] which is shaped to fit against the toe of the shoe I to form a toe cap. The heel portion .I A is likewise provided .at :its irear, free end with .an upwardly extending integral portion 18 which :is adapted to fit around the :back of the The portion 12 :is provided at each side thereof with a plurality of integral upwardly extending tabs l.9,forming corresponding sets of tabs adapted to be disposed on each side of the shoe 15. The shank engaging portion 13, adjacent the rear end thereof, is provided with :an integral upwardly projecting tab 20 on each side thereof.
A strap 21, of :fiexible material, is fastened at one end thereof by means of a fastening 22 to the inner side of the toe Icap .l! and extends therefrom upwardly and rearwardly over the upper part of the shoe l5, asseen in Figure 1, and is provided with spaced loops 23 and 24. A flexible member 25 is attached by means of a fastening v26, at; one end thereof, to the inner side of the upturned portion 18 and extends upwardly therefrom and is adapted to be disposed against the counter of the shoe 15. The flexible member 25 is provided with a loop .21. A fiexiblemembertil is connectedby means of fastenings 29 to the tabs 19 atone side of the plate portion 12. The-flexible member 28 "is provided with a restricted upper portion to which is connected a buckle 30. A strap 3| is provided with an enlarged base portion 32, which preferably corresponds in shape to the .member 28 and which is adapted to be fastened tothe tabs l9 at the opposite side of the plateportion 12 by means of fastenings 29. The strap 3| extends through theloop 23 and is adapted to .be .detachably and adjustably connected 'to'the member ZB'by'means of the buckle 30 to combine with the secured end portion of the strap 2| for securing the antiskid attachment in to the toe vportion of the M of the plate H is off-set downwardly relative- 08 '5- AS best See in Figure the Portions 28 and 32 are disposed on the inner sides of the tabs I9.
A strap 33 has its intermediate portion extending through the loop 27 and has corresponding portions thereof attached to the inner sides of the tabs 20 by means of the fastenings 34. One end of the strap 33 is provided with a buckle 35 and the opposite end 36 thereof is restricted and is adapted to extend through the loop 24 and over the instep of the shoe I5 and is adjustably and detachably fastened to the buckle 35 to secure the attachment I9, with the members 28, 3I and H, securely to the shoe I5. It will be readily apparent that the toe cap H, the portion I6 and the upturned portion I8 will prevent the plate II from sliding relatively to the sole of the shoe I5 and will thus combine with the straps and flexible members to prevent any relative move- ,ment of the attachment IIl relatively to the shoe I5, when applied thereto as seen in Figure 1.
Furthermore, it will be readily apparent that the attachment I can be readily removed by detaching the straps 3| and 36 from the buckles 30 and 35, respectively.
The plate portions I 2 and I4 are provided with a plurality of fold portions forming downwardly extending transversely disposed ribs 31, the bottom edges of all of which are disposed substantially in the same plane. The ribs 31 form serrations which are adapted to engage a slippery surface, such as a surface covered with ice and snow to prevent the attachment I9 from slipping relatively thereto.
The plate portions I2 and I3, as seen in Figure 2, are provided with apertures 38 for receiving driven fastenings, not shown, which are adapted to be anchored in the half sole and shank portion of the shoe, where it is desired to permanently attach the anti-skid attachment I6 to the'shoe I5.
Referring to Figures and 6, 39 designates generally another form of anti-skid or non-slipping device for shoes, and which comprises a plate of metal having an end portion 40 adapted to be disposed against the underside of the half sole of a shoe I5, partially shown in dotted lines in Figure 5, and which is shaped and sized to correspond thereto. The plate, forming the anti-skid device 39 includes an upwardly curved intermediate portion M which fits the shank of the shoe I5 and corresponds to the shape thereof. The opposite end of the plate is downwardly offset and is adapted to engage against the underside of the shoe heel and is shaped and sized to conform thereto and forms the portion 42, which is connected to the rear end of the portion 45 by means of a substantially perpendicular flange portion 43 which engages against the forward end of the heel of the shoe. The device 46 includes a plate, designated generally 41, one end portion of which, designated 48, is adapted to fit against the underside of a half sole of the shoe I5, shown in dotted lines in Figure '7, and which is shaped and sized to conform thereto. The opposite end of the plate 4'! comprises the portion 49 which fits against the underside of the shoe shank and which is likewise shaped and sized to conform thereto. The plate 41 is fastened to the half sole and shank by means of driven fastenings 5G. The portion 48 at its forward, free end is provided with an upturned portion 5I which is bowed transversely to fit against the toe of the shoe I5 to form a toe cap. The portion 48 is pressed out to form a plurality of protuberances 52 which extend downwardly to provide a serrated or roughened surface for the forward part of the shoe I5. The non-slipping device 45 also includes a plate 53 which is shaped and sized to conform to the underside of the shoe heel and which is fastened thereto by means of driven fastenings 54. The plate 53 is provided with protuberances 55, corresponding to the protuberances 52 and for the same purpose, and is also provided with a fold portion forming the rib 56 which is substantially V-shaped in cross section and which is disposed near the back part of the shoe heel and diagonally thereof, to thus provide additional non-slipping means for the heel portion of the shoe I5, shown in Figure 7.
Various modifications and changes, in the embodiments of the invention as disclosed, are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
An anti-skid attachment for shoes comprising a metal plate having portions adapted to engage against the underside of the sole, shank and heel of a shoe and substantially'covering said shoe portions, the portions of the plate which engage the sole and heel having outwardly projecting, integral transverse ribs, said plate portions having integral upwardly extending tabs at the edges thereof and which are disposed across the toe of the shoe, at the sides of the sole and shank, and across the back of the heel, a flexible member attached at one end to the tab, which is disposed at the toe of the shoe, and extending upwardly along the forward part of the shoe, said flexible member having spaced loops, strap ends attached to the tabs, disposed at the sides of the sole, one of said strap ends extending through one of the loops and being detachably fastened to theother strap end, a flexible element attached to the tab, at the back of the heel, and extending upwardly therefrom, and a strap slidably connected, intermediate of its ends, to the flexible element and having complementary portions connected to the tabs, at the sides of the shank, one end of the strap extending loosely through another of the loops and being detachably fastened to the other end of the strap, and said tabs also functioning to prevent the plate from slideirlilg longitudinally or laterally relatively to the s cc.
