OTHNIEL J. SMITH, OF WAUWATOSA, WISCONSIN.
IEWPRVEIVIENT iN HASPS AND STAPLES.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lqgQQ, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTHNIEL J. SMITH, of VVauwatosa, in the county ot' Milwaukee and State of W isoonsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hasp and Staples; and I do hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part fot' this specitication, and to the letters and ligures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure l ot' the drawing is a vertical longitudinal section of my hasp and staple. Fig. 2 is a top viewot same.
This invention has relation to door-fastenin gs; and it consists in the novel construction of a staple and pivoted catch used in connection with a hasp, substantially as hereinafter described.
Referring` to the drawing, A designates a hasp, having pivoted to it, near its forward end, a catch, B. The short end of this catch, measuring from the rivet, is made on a circle, with a notch, a., in the middle, directly opposite the long end, corresponding in width to the slot c in the hasp, through which the staple passes., The long end ot' the catch is bent up to the form of a scroll or lug to produce a l thumb-piece by which to manipulate the catch.` y When at rest, the long end ofthe catch depends, the lug acting as a weight, so that a part of the upper end covers a portion of the hasp-slot.
Now, by raising the catch to a horizontal position, the notch a and slot al coincide, and allow the staple a2 to pass through the latter. The catch is then allowed to drop, whereupon that portion which it has been stated covers part of the slot when the latch is at rest, euters a notch, a3, cut in the side of the staple, thus completing the fasteuin g vof the door or other object to which the devices appertain.
The hole bin the rear end of the hasp is elongated so as to allow the hasp to accommodate itself to the shrinking or sagging of the door, the staple or pin which holds the hasp being put through the hole b.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hasp A, having the notched and pivoted catch B, in combination with the notched staple a?, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
OTHNIEL J. SMITH.
