UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BATH-ROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,258, dated December 24, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HELEN G. GovEL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Method of Constructing a Bath-Room, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of a portable bath-room; and it consists in making an ornamental piece of furniture in such a manner that its parts shall be capable of adjustability-to form the sides of a bathroom, Aor in any way that will serve to inclose a space within the apartment where it is placed and convert it into a separate room containing all the appliances that are usually found in an ordinary bath-room.
In thc accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of the room with the doors open. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, Fig. 1, showing the parts extended.
A is the frame or back of the room, which is fixed to the side wall of the apartment, and is made of any suitable width and height. B B are the sides. C/ G C C" are panels of a height to correspond with the frame, which are constructed to slide upon each other, C C being provided with transverse projections a. a on the interior, which work in slots correspondingly formed on the exterior of the sides B B. To the panels C C doors are hung, which may be solid or have glass inserted to f Msuit the taste and style of furniture.
I do not conne myself to this method of Y making the panels, as I may choose to vary them by using some equivalent device for the extending sides of the bath-room.
D is the bath-tub, which may be inclosed or not, as desired; and E E are the water-supply pipes. .F is the shower-bath. G is the'basin, which is'supportednpon a swivel-arm so as to be moved out of the Way when not required for. use. Underneath the bath-tub I provide a carpet-protector, e, which may'be made of India rubber orvany other suitable material, and is fastened to and is wound upon the roller d, which is made to workin bearin gs on the frame or panels.
When it is desirable a commode may be placed wit-hin the room.
The design of my bath-room is to economize space; and it will be seen that, when not in use, it occupies no more room in the apartment where it is located than an ordinary wardrobe, or any similar piece of furniture; but when a suitable-sized room is required for bathing purposes it is only necessary to extend the parts, when a securely andperfectly inclosed space is formed, making a complete bath-room with the usual conveniences.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The sliding panels C', having guides a on one side and grooves. on the other, in combination with the stationary sides B B and sliding panels C having doors, as set forth, the whole arranged and operating for the purpose specilied.
2. In combination therewith, the carpet-protector e and roller d, arranged and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
' HELEN Gr. COVEL.
