' To all whom it may concern.
.Be it known that I, WAGLAW KORNA- szEwsKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Tables and Seats, of'which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates. to furniture and has particular application to a combined chair and table. 7
The chief characteristic of the invention resides in mounting a chair for pivotal movement upon the lower partlof the table whereby the chair can be swung to a position beneath the table, or movedto a position beyond one side of the table for use, in combination with-means for locking'the chair in its folded position beneath the table, v
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a resilient element constituting a buffer for the chair when the latter is swung from an extended position to its folded position beneath the table, the resilient element further functioning automatically to move the chair from its folded to its active position upon the release of the locking means utilized for holding the chair in its folded position. 'With these and other objects which will appear from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention resides in the construction, combination and ar-' rangement of partsla's claimed.

The table. A may be of any suitable design and includes a top 10 and supporting o0 legs 11. The legs are connected adjacenttheir lower ends by means of rungs or transverse rods 12. 7 The chairs each comprise a seat 13 which is connected and supported by front and rear legs 14 and 15 respectively, the latter.
beingdisposed at an angle or inclination with respect to the front legs 14 and connected at'their lower ends to the front legs.
The legs 15 project an appreciable distance above the. seat '13, and are connected together by a fixed section 17 and a movable section 18 of a back. The movable section 18 is hinged upon the fixed section '17 to fold down and against the latter. in'parallelism therewith, prior to folding of the chair toits positionbeneath the table in a manner to be hereinafter described. It will be noted, that the rear legs 15 project 17 of the back, to constitute'a rest for the movable section 18 when the latter is swung into a position in vertical alinement with the fixed section. It might here be stated, that the upper ends of the rear legs 15 also contact against the depending wall 19 of the table when the chairs are in folded position.' The legs 15 areprovided with openings for the reception of the rungs or rods 12, and in this manner the chairs are pivotally mounted for movement to a folded position or to a position for use. 1
'For the purposeofguiding each chair in its movements, and also to limit the movement of each chair .to its position beyond the table, I provide the underside of the table with a pair of spaced cleats 20 defining guides for the slide 21. Terminally secured to one of the rear legs 15 of each chair and projecting beneath the table is an arm 22, which has its opposite'end hingedly secured to the slide 21. By reason of this construction, it is obvious that the slide tends to guide thechair in its. movement, and; when the slide 21 contacts one end of theguide groove defined by the cleat 20, the slide tends to limit-the movement of the chair from its folded to its extended position.
For lock'ng the chair inits folded posi which is automatically engaged by a bolt 24: whenthe chair is swung to its folded position. This bolt 24 is vertically disposed'and operates through an opening in a" casing 25 The bolt is normally disposed in the path of movement of the keeper plate-28, to engage the latter in the manner above stated when the chair is swung to 'its folded position,
The bolt 24: is provided with an elongated opening 26 through which slides the shank of a spring pressed operating pin27. The shank 28 is provided with a cam surface or edge 29 which cooperates with the adjacent edge of the slot or opening 26.0f the bolt to elevate the latter when the pin-is pushed upon. A spring 30 encircles the shank 28 V a'nd bearsagainst the depending wall=19of the table at the head of the pin, and functions to maintain the pin extended'to pos1- tion whereby the bolt 2st is permitted to as sume. a position in the pathof movement of the keeper plate 23; However, when it is desired to make use of the chair, the p1n=27 is pressed inwardly against the tension of the spring 30 whereupon the cam edge 29 moving overone or all of the slots 26-ele vates the bolt 24" to a position to release the chair as will be readily understood, v
Positioned withinthe guide groovedefined by the spacedcleats 20, is a headedbolt or the like 31 surrounded by a coiled spring 32 which yieldably' supports the bolt as shown. The bolt is disposed in the path of movement of the slide 21', so that when the chair is swung inwardly upon its pivot the slide is brought into contact with the yieldably mounted bolt 31, so that the latter pro;
vides a cushion to absorb any shock or jar which might occur incident to the folding of the chair. However, the spring pressed bolt 31 is primarily intended to throwthe chair from its folded to an extended position, when the chair is released from the bolt 2e. Obviously, when the chair is moved'to a folded position, the spring 32 is placed under tension and held in ,this condition by reason of the fact-that the. chair is locked by means of the bol't'24 in said position. hen thebolt is actuated to release the chair, the spring 32iexpandsj and 'mov'es-thechair upon its pivot from a folded to extended position. While I have shownonl y one chair at each side of the ta-b1e, I-' desire to have 1t understood that any number of chairs 'may be mounted in; the 'manner described and used" 1n connection with the single table, this however dependinglargely upon the design of the table and thesize of the same.
