FLOYD M. NEFF AND WARD B. RUNNER, OF PRATTSBURG, NEW YORK.
BAG-HOLDER.
Application filed September 13, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FLOYD M. Nnrr and WARD B. RUNNER, residing at Prattsburg, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for mill spouts and the like and has for its object the provision of a device adapted for engagement upon the lower portion or discharge end of a mill spout and so constructed as to hold a bag or sack properly in position to receive material discharged through the spout, a shifting lever being associated with the device whereby to effecta very quick and easy release of the bag or sack when filled.
An important and more specific object is the provision of a device of this character including a pair of relatively folding prongs upon which the bag is adapted to be engaged and further includes a movable prong which may be retracted with respect to lts hearing or supporting member whereby to permit stripping of the bag therefrom.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spout equipped with my device and showlng a bag applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the spout, showing my device in top plan,
Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing one side of the spout and showing in face view, the mechanism for operating the movable in p Fig. 4 is a view at right angles to Fig, 3,
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. showing the pin moved to disengaging position,
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken through the longitudinal center of the movable pin carrying rod, and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the members carrying the stationary prongs.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a mill spout Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1920.
Serial No. 323,551.
spout is a plate 15 which is L-shaped in cross section and which is secured to the spout by means of suitable screws or the like 16. Secured upon the face of the plate at the upper edge thereof is a guide bracket 17 and formed through the outwardly extending lower portion of the said plate 15 vertically beneath the bracket 17 is an openmg 18. Associated with this plate is an L-shaped member. 19 which has its longer arm passing through the opening 18 and bracket 17 and which has its shorter arm disposed beneath the outwardly extending lower portion of the plate. Extending outwardly from the end portion of the shorter arm of this member is a pin 20 which is tapered in form to provide a penetrating point and which extends through a circular hole '21 in the outwardly extending lower portion of the plate. In order that the bar 19 may be moved for varying the position of the pin 20, we provide a lever 22 which is pivoted at 23, upon the plate 15 and which is provided with a slot 24 engaged upon a bolt 25 extending from the bar 19. The other end of the lever 22 extends through a guide bracket 26 secured at one vertical edge of the plate 15. Beneath the bracket 26 the plate 15 is cut, as shown at 27, to provide a resilient tongue 28 which is bent outwardly to have its upper edge disposed beneath the lower edge of the lever 22 to hold the lever in its highest position. .We also provide a leaf spring 29 which is secured upon the bracket 26 and which has its upper end free and bearing against the lever 22.
The parts being assembled as above described, the operation is as follows The bag or sack to be filled is placed upon the lower end of the spout A and is engaged upon the prongs 14 of the bracket members 10. Another portion of the bag is then engaged upon the pin 20, it being understood that the lever 22 is in its highest position at this time. When the bag is filled and it is desired to remove it, it is merely necessary that the operator grasp the lever 22 and move it forwardly a slight distance with respect to the plate 15 to disengage the lever from the tongue 28, whereupon the operator moves the lever downwardly which results in downward movement of the pin 20 which causes the sack or bag to be stripped from the pin, after which the'sack is of course disengaged from the prongs 14.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that we have thus provided a very simple and inexpensive'device which may be made and marketed as an attachment for mill spouts and by means of which a sack may be quickly and easily disposed in proper position upon the spout and be just as easily disengaged therefrom.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it
is of course to be understood that we reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described our invention, we.
claim 1. In combination with a discharge spout having prongs thereon adapted for engagement by a sack, a plate secured upon said spout and L-shaped with its horizontal flange at its lower end, a vertical L-shaped bar 'guidably mounted for slidable movement over the face of said plate, the lower flange of the plate having an opening through which said bar passes, a prong extending upwardly from the lower end of said bar and adapted for engagement by a sack, the flange of said plate having a hole for the passage of said prong, a lever movable over said plate and. pivotally connected therewith at one end and having slot and pin connection with said vertical bar, and means for retaining said lever in elevated position with said spring extending above said flange.
2. In combination with a discharge spout havingprongs thereon adapted for engagement by a sack, a plate secured upon said spout and L -shaped with its horizontal flange at its lower end, a vertical L-sh'aped bar guidably mounted for slid'able movement over the face of said plate, the lower flange of the plate having an opening through which said bar passes, an upwardly extending prong connected with the lower end of said bar and adapted for engagement by a sack, the flange of said plate having a hole for the passage of said prong, a lever movable over said plate and pivotally connected therewith at one end and having slot and pin connection with said vertical :bar, means for retaining said lever inelevated position with said spring extending above said flange, a bracket securedadj-a'cent one edge of said plate and through which said lever extends, said plate being provided with a tongue extending toward said bracket whereby to provide a retaining lug for holding said lever normally in its highest position, and a spring secured within said bracket and having its free end bearing against said lever.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures. v
FLQYD M. NEFF. WARD B. RUNNER.
