:BAG-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application led July 29, 1915. Serial No. 42,474.
To all whomy t may concern.
Be it known that I, DORELLE S. PARENT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Menominee, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrlption thereof.
This invention relates to the subject of bag holders, and more especially to machines means for engaging the edges of the 'mouth' -of a bag to hold the bag upright wlth its mouth fully opened, one of the bag-engaging members being movable and adapted to be manipulated by the foot of the operator to distend the mouth of the bag, means being provided whereby upon release of the foot operated mechanism, one of the bag-engaging members will automatically move to a position where it will release the bag.
In addition to the foregoing prominent feature of the invention, the invention contemplates the production of a novel type of bag engaging members which are of such a nature that engaging the same with a bag and release of such engagement are facilitated.
A simple and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the improved bag holder, the section being taken on the line 1-1, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary. view in elevation showing the foot lever portion of this invention.
The improved bag holder comprises in its general organization a Stand including the end legs 1 and top 2, the top being provided with a bag-receiving opening 3 having its entrance through one longitudinal edge vof the top. A supporting arm 4 is fastened to the table top adjacent one end of the opening 3, the arm having an odset portion 5 that over-hangs the opening 3 and carries a downwardly inclined bag-engaging plate 6 that is transversely curved. Adjacent the other end of the opening 3, a flat plate 7 is mounted on the table top 2, said plate being provided with centrally located spaced parallel upstanding ribs 8 provided with inwardly projecting upper flanges 9 that overhang the plates 7 between said ribs and cooperate with said plate to form guide grooves 10 for the reception of a slide 11 that projects over the opening 3 and is equipped with a bag-engaging plate 12 that is similar in all respects to the plate 6. The slide-11 at its rear end carries a central upstanding lug 13 equipped with an eye 14, and to each side of said lug, the slide is provided with upstanding angular arms 15 the free portions of which project over the ribs 8. At its forward end, and adjacent the longitudinal edges thereof, plate 7 is provided with lugs 16 that aline with the free ends of arms 15 and said arms and lugs are connected by the contractible springs 17.
Lug 13, through its eye 14, is connected with a cable 18 extending over a pulley 19 mounted in journals 2O at each side of a pulley-clearance notch 21 formed in the table top edge, the cable extending down to a foot lever 22 that has a pivotal connection 23 with one of the legs of the stand. A gravity, or. other type of latch 24 is pivoted to another leg of the stand and is adapted to prevent upward movement of the foot lever 22.
The plate 7, ribs 8, arms 15, and lugs 16 may be cast or otherwise formed, and it is preferred to provide the slide 11 with base anges 25 that raise the same above the surface of the plate 7, to facilitate the sliding movements of said slide.
It will be understood that the bag-engaging plate 6 ,is stationary and that the similar plate 12 is movable. In use, lever 22 having been released from latch 24, the said lever rises, or swings u ward and permits the tension of springs 1% to force plate 12 toward plate 6. The lbag is then placed within the opening 3 with its mouth engaged by the plates 6 and 12, and lever 22 is then forced downward, withdrawing plate 12, and when the lever 22 has reached its lowermost position, latch 24is engaged therewith. When the parts are in the positions just described, the mouth of the bag is fully distended, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, so that filling of the bag is facilitated. The shape of the plates 6 and 12 is, of course, an important feature of the invention, in that when the bag is distended, the ining a bag-receiving opening therein, a sta.
tionary arm at one end of said opening and having an offset portion carrying a depending,k downwardly inclined transversely curved plate for engaging the mouth of a bag, aguide-way adjacent the opposite end of the opening, a slide mounted in the guide- .y way and carrying a depending downwardly inclined transversely curved plate for engaging the mouth of a bag, and means for operating the slide to cause the mouth of a bag to be distended.
2. A bag holder comprising a support having an opening therein, a stationary arm at one portion of the opening and projecting thereover and having a downwardly inolined transversely curved portion depending through said opening, a movable arm disposed opposite the stationary rarm and projecting over the opening and having a downwardly inclined transverselyV curved portion that depends through said opening.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto set my hand at Menominee, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan;
