Description
J. FARRISI. FURNACE JOINT. APPLICATION FILED AUG-28. 181.8.
1,342,258. Patented'June 1-, 1920.
UNITED sT rasi JOSEPH 'FARRIS, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS- FURNACE-JOINT;
To" all whom it may concern: j
Be it known that I, JOSEPH FARnis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon, and
State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements" in Furnace- Joints, of-which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to furnac or stove structures, and aims primarily to provide improvements in means for securing the dome and fire pot together, so that the said dome and fire pot are in effect a unitary structure. 7
A further object of the invention is to provide a furnace structure of such character that its dome and fire pot may be readily applied to or removed from each other without the instrumentality of such devices as have heretofore been employed, and which is of such character that the said dome and fire pot are firmly locked together at their points of connection.
WVith these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View taken through the dome and fire pot, constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the same as they willappear when locked together,
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the dome,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation showing one of the locking devices,
Fig. at is a perspective view of one of the locking hooks,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the locking wedges, and
Fig. 6 is a detail fragmentary sectional view illustrating locking means of slightly modified form.
The firepot of the interior furnace structure is indicated generally at 7 and comprises a tubular member having an annular flange 8 at its upper end. This flange projects outwardly from the fire pot 7 and'h-as an upturned flange or rib 9 at its outer edge. The part, indicated at 10, is the dome, and is closed at its upper end as shown. This Specification of Letters Patent: lifggtqgnte 1. Jung}, 1920'. Application ,filed August 28, 1918. ser al No. 251,818. I I i 1 domeis provided with the usual flueopen'ing 11; The lower edge of the domerests upon the outwardly pro ect ng flange 0f the Arrangedin spaced relatidn around the dome 10 and upon the exterior surface there} of near its lower end, are a plurality of outwardly projecting lugs 12, each of which has its outer end turned upwardly in a hook as at 13. These lugs are preferably formed integral with the dome, and receive the upperextremities of retaining hooks 14. The retaining hooks have openings 15 at their upper ends to engage over the books 13, and are provided. with inturned lower ends or bills 16 designed to pass beneath the annular flange 8 of the section 7 *edges 17 formed of cast iron or other suitable metal are driven between the inturned bills 16 of the hooks 14 and the lower surface of. the flange 8, ant it is obvious that the driving of these wedges in this manner causes the upper and lower ends respectively of the fire pot and dome to be forcibly brought together and firmly so held. lVhen thus properly secured, the dome and fire pot are held together as a unit, and when it'is desired to separate the dome and fire pot, it is but necessary to withdraw the wedges and to remove the hooks 1 1.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, there is illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention, wherein the wedges heretofore described are omitted. In this modified form readily separated when required.
The foregoing description andthe drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I, may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
said retainingfhooks, said retaining hooks Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by 4 Letters Patent is A furnace joint in combination with a V comparatively square openings, the portions above said openings adapted to completely fill the spacebetween said upwardly benthooks and said dome thereby preventing outward movement of the lower portions of being curved outwardly toward their lower portion and'then being bent to form inwardly extending horizontal bills," whereby said retaining books may pass around the lower portion of the flange of the fire pot, to allow said bills to extend around said flange, and means carried by said bills to jam against the under surface of said flange,
thus urging said bills downwardly from said flange, whereby said retaining hooks'will firmly hold said dome upon said fire pot.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH FARRI S.
