IMPROVEMENT iN SOFA-BEDSTEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,210, dated December 24,1872.

To all 4whom 'it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ENOCH LORD, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vSofa-Bedsteads;l and I` do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

The purpose of my invention is to produce a sofa or lounge capable of beingturned into a bed, in the manner hereinafter described.

vais the sofa-back. b is a projection to serve as a head-board or pillow-rest when the sofa is turned or opened so as to form a bed. c arethe slats of the bottom of that part ofthe bed within the frame of the sofa. They are held together in a frame, d, and it can be turned back toward the back of the sofa on pivots at c. The supports of the'bottom of the bed within the frame f are the under side of the springs of the sofa-cushionvwhen reversed, as it is, by the turning over of the frame. This frame is turned on the hinges h. When thus turned back or opened this frame f is supported on the outer edge by the hinged or pivoted klegs z', capable of being turned up out of the way when the parts are folded together. The arm ofthe lounge or end piece on the frame j', when the parts are all opened or arranged to constitute a bed, both serves for a pillow-rest and end-support of that part of the bed. This is illustrated at Fig. 3, and the spring or catch is shown in the slightly-enlarged figure numbered 4. This end piece folds upward on the hinges j, so that the top part 7c forms the top ofthe pillow-rest, and the lower end of it, when thus swung on the hinges, forms a leg or support. When restored to the position it occupies in a sofa (see Fig. l) it is held in position by the spring-catch l passing under the lip or tongue m. Under the frame d is a space in which to pack bed-clothes.

To restore the parts into the form of a sofa, simply lift or turn the frame j back onto frame d. The weight of the end or arin of the sofa will cause the catch l to pass over the tongue' 4 m, and so keep it in place.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The im proved sofa-bed herein described, having the hinged lifting Slat-frame d, the folding or opening frame f, the reversing end 7c with its spring-catch l m, and also the projection b, all arranged and operating as herein described.
